Mostly had to do with the fact that those games also had to run on the Apple II so they couldn't do l33t hax0r programming tricks. But also because NTSC C64 are hard to do demo effects with due to the short blank.

by todays standards a c64 is pretty expensive, you can get a decent gaming pc for what the c64 with disk drive and monitor cost if you account for inflation. I don't think actual poor people got a c64 until very late.

>>10888302
Out of the recent ones I've been playing 720 skateboarding and paperboy. Wonderboy 1 and 2 are pretty good too. Sega games are pretty decent overall.

Popular ones I've heard from others are Impossible mission and r type. For how good the graphics are its easier for me think of good spectrum games which is odd.

It was funny back then that people didn't realize it was worth paying twice as much for a computer that is 10x more powerful. Weird attitude back then.

>> No.10894401

And no, it was really cheap, like $150 in 1985 in the US. It was cheaper than the NES. The disk drive was expensive though, it was around the same price as the computer, although that's about as much as 4 NES games, so in the end you're saving a lot of money if you're going with C64.

>> No.10894407

>by todays standards a c64 is pretty expensive
The C64 was often sold at deep discounts. Jack Tramiel was a business bastard and would cut his own throat to squeeze out a competitor. Everyone I knew with a C64 got one during one of those crazy sales. And we were all rocking tape decks because nobody had the money for disc drives.

Not exactly. The C64 didn't share a CPU with the Spectrum so such low effort ports were generally not an issue. It did share a CPU with the Apple II so...same happened with the Amiga getting loads of lazy copypaste Atari ST ports.

They could reuse a lot of code when converting from the apple ii. Some c64 ports didn't even bother to change the ghastly color schemes from the apple ii versions.

>> No.10899361 [DELETED]

DataSoft were notorious for that. They always designed their games around the Apple II and would do lazy ports to Atari 8-bit and C64 where they wouldn't even bother changing the color palette. Broderbund were also a primarily Apple II-focused company.

There were more differences than similarities though. Sprites/Tiles vs. Copper Lists is a pretty big rewrite. Not to mention how many Amiga games were in C or AMOS as opposed to native 68k assembly. The prevalence of amiga -> MD ports had more to do with favorable publishing agreements and having a fast CPU more than it being a 68k. I strongly suspect if it had been an equally fast x86 or MIPS or ARM it would have seen the same level of ports.
