They actually retconned his origin, which was supposed to be this nondescript blue little alien inspired by the smurfs, as intended by Masahisa Ikegami. The person who made Mr Driller did that to help market his game to Nakamura (the ceo) since he wasn’t willing for anyone to touch the series after the poor reception of their numerous Dig Dug 2 revivals. The entire canon is fucked, they even recently tried to do an expansive connected universe called UGSF that interlinked ace combat and a bunch of other properties with DD then completely retconned it because it was stupid on their part.

They didn’t form an internal “brand guide and rulebook” for their arcade characters and games until the last decade anon. Masahisa wanted a blue alien, the marketing team wanted a man in a visor, and this dude just retconned everything and made the original hero into a has been. This is the equivalent of Miyamoto leaving after DK or SMB and Tezuka declaring Mario as a retired drug addict plumber that likes to trip balls.

It doesn’t help the literal creator of Digdug (Masahisa) fucked off after the first game for heavens knows why. He’s part of the same Ikegami family that owns that famous electronics company (and also made all those old arcade games for Nintendo when they started out, you might’ve heard of Donkey Kong)
