What important of a factor was good/bad marketing for a console's success? Did people buy consoles based off of ads in magazines or did they just go to the store and buy the next Nintendo?

I never read magazines but there were plenty of TV ads, store kiosks, and you'd see a bunch of games at rental stores.
Also you'd play games at a friend's house and be like, I need to get this for myself.

I was a teenager here in Australia when the GameCube released and didn't even really knew it existed, along with the OG Xbox. PC and PS2 dominated that era for me and my group of friends in high-school. There was only one kid I knew who had an N64 before the GameCube came out, and we only ever played games like Mario Party on it at his house.

It's both, but I feel it was a lot more relevant then.
"marketing" now just seems to be dumping money into internet shilling. Some of the ads were like pieces of art in the magazines.
