>It is one thing to hear/read about how well we are doing in Japan vs. Sony, it's another to personally witness it. | just visited 10 retail stores in Tokyo (most in Akihabra); it's now spring break so the crowds of teens/college kids are huge. We are killing Sony. In every store, Saturn hardware is sold out and there are stacks of Playstation. The retailers commented they can't compare the true sales rate because Saturn sells out before they can measure accurately. Our interactive displays are better, our software displays and stocking far superior. It is not unusual to see 40-50 copies of Panzer Zwei or Virtua Fighter 2 stocked in even small stores and they are selling fast. I wish I could get all our staff, sales people, retailers, analysts, media, etc. to see and understand what's happening in Japan; they would then understand why we will win here in the U.S. eventually. How do we show that at E3? - Tom

tl;dr oh no the retailers couldn't give me numbers but trust me bro Sony just has more stocks, I mean we didn't have any stock, I mean the retailer didn't even have our Saturn, I mean we're KILLING THEM!

P.S: My uncle, I mean, -I-, genuinely works at Sega so I know

Email's been posted before.

in hindsight, we know that playstation was less that 10% behind in console sales after japan launch when both were $400+ at end of 1994.

This does read like cope, because after a year, it would be obvious that Sega in North America were loosing their shit to Sony. So why not post an email about the success in Japan to raise morale a bit? Its not like Panzer and VF2 weren't good titles.

94 and 95 where kind of shit for Japanese PS users, looking back besides Ridge Racer, RR revolution, Tekken, maybe King Field and Beyond the Beyond (that's a big ass maybe and just because the Shining series was somewhat popular in Japan) there wasn't much, it was through 96 when things started changing and by early 97 with the release of FF7 and DQ7 announced for PS, Sony pretty much eat the whole Japanese home console market.
I can see why old Tom would be all "yes we can", by mid 96 shit hasn't hit the fan yet.

the first PS1s were also not very reliable and had a bunch of hardware gremlins
