In the US, it is incredibly difficult to get social security for disability, whether for mental illness of physical. They will reflexively deny all claims for the first year. If you're living on your own, that can be expensive enough to keep you out of it.

Typically, you apply with a bunch of documentation from your various doctors and such. Then they'll deny the claim. Then you have to press them on the issue for at least a year. Then they'll have you resubmit documentation. Then they send someone out to interview you and in your case your family. Then they'll give you enough money to eat and see a movie in the theater once a week.

its pretty bleak living life like that. i have been on disability for a number of years and it has hurt more than helped. the social stigma alone can be paralyzing should you ever want to come up for a bit of air. even in treatment ive felt dehumanized. it can get very scary.

one thing that helped me was meditating and learning and pushing yourself to focus. focus. focus. focus. and realize shit will get fucked up - just brush it off and keep going. there has to be a job that you will be good at a college route might not be good - fuck it isnt even very good for many grads

Tell your university. It won't be a bad thing. They will give you more time on tests and other neat benefits. It is the law. You will need to tell each of your professors individually. They will also probably give you unlimited extensions on homework of you claim you were having an "episode."
