OP said he was given antipsychotics, that doesn't mean he was or is psychotic. Off-label prescribing is a thing and psychiatrists hand out antipsychotics like candy. Half of all American foster children in congregate care were on them at one point, because that made staff's jobs easier. Autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, treatment resistant depression, and anorexia are all diagnoses which often result in an antipsychotic prescription.

Reduce the dose every week and eventually you won't have dependence. The body requires time to adjust, quitting cold turkey means you are asking for unnecessary misery because your brain is going to think you're dying.

In short, drug dependence is easy to get rid of if you do it gradually because it gives your body time to adjust whereas if you quit cold turkey the brain freaks out because your body is now missing some chemicals that was abundant before you went cold turkey.

Not OP but I take 2x 5mg Fluphenazine (an antipsychotic) and Lithium carbonate. I do minimal exercise but am not overweight, eat good, and sleep good (apart from occassional disruptions from my nicotine vapes habit). Now that I'm stable on this regiment, unlike on the other pills that were pushed on me, how do I reduce my dose while remaining the same? I've tried a few times taking 5mg + half a 5mg pill and I don't become destabilized, but I haven't done that in a controlled timespan to test.

What does it mean to be destabilized? Do you get violent and angry? If so then that's not "instability", everyone gets angry and violent. The difference is most people don't act on those feelings so if that's the case for you then meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy is a good way to remove all chemical dependence.

No, usually people have to taper. Psychs are very difficult to cold turkey. I made it 8 days off OCD meds and was forced to go back on, it was just too uncomfortable.
