I was thinking just now. Hoping one of you med friends can take it somewhere.
But basically what if we take the idea of over active immune systems. Essentially where they are hyperactive because they were improperly trained and add on to it that case where tiny bits of peanut powder could train people back from peanut allergy

what if it's the exact same case psychologically. Because of a lack of resistance. A lot of modern mental illsness sprouts directly from a lack of 'real' adversity. I frame it like that because you could potentially manfuacture real-fake adversity. I suppose this is similar to the antifragile concept.

1. It's Discord premium but open source
2. No big tech snooping in chat
3. 4chan or /med/ rules completely anonymous

Hi lads, first year PA student here. I do not regularly hang out of /sci/, apologies if I'm breaking any of your board etiquette.
Just finished a vaccination lecture for pharmacology.
Here's my first question for you braniacs that I can't seem to find: does a naturally acquired infection boost your INNATE immunity? Obviously, it boosts your adaptive immunity against that specific pathogen, but does it somehow strengthen your innate immunity over the long run?

Thank you in advance.

No, but there have been a few studies that tried to find links between the two. I don't think there was any notable findings in that field but you can go look it up if it interests you.
But it seems that the research related to vaccines and innate immunity are most geared towards revealing minute details on how the innate immune system has elements of adaptive immunity rather than directs links with vaccines.

me

I'll rephrase it:
We all know that we build up our immunity when we're kids by being exposed to pathogens and letting our bodies fight them. My question is, does this only strengthen our adaptive immunity? Or does it sharpen our body's natural response to any pathogen?

Vaccines work because they train our adaptive immunity against specific pathogens, which allows us to more readily fight those pathogens when we encounter the real version. This, however, means that when we encounter the real version, our adaptive immunity is ready to fight it, but our innate immunity is not activated as it normally would be, and our overall physiological response to the antigen is much less severe. Does this leave our innate immunity "untrained" in fighting pathogens?

>> No.12789111

>>12789031
you think this is hard? it's easy, don't be afraid of commitment

>> No.12789125

>>12789101
No you nigger. The innate is general and broad in targeting. It's not "untrained" because it was never trained well in the first place. It responds to virtually all infections, including those that don't become significant enough for the adaptive immunity to kick in. Also, innate has first digs in all primary infections and still acts in the secondary onward.

>> No.12789135

>>12789101
my understanding of it (from reading molecular biology texts not an expert) is no. innate immunity is essentially like a computer program -- if certain receptors see VERY specific biochemical motifs, it launches a very specific response.

what i understand as the advantage of vaccination is that it creates memory cells that can more quickly respond to the pathogen that shows up next time. the speed leads to the less severe overall physiological response, not differential engagement of innate immunity.

Thanks for your help.

I was thinking that since some things reduce our innate immunity (certain pathologies, certain drug classes, etc) and some things boost our innate immunity (exercise, good diet, etc) that infections and our response to them might be included in having long term effects on its overall effectiveness. But it sounds like the answer is no, getting naturally acquired infections does not improve your body's ability to fight other infections later on.

What exactly is going on in my throat when I vape? When I vape nicotine, I feel like an acute throat hit that becomes tolerable. When I vape THC, it feels like, with water filtration, I can breath in thick clouds and then breath in normal air to fill up my lungs and exhale, but upon on the exhale, it feels like my throat becomes a weird combination of itchy and drying that make me either want to cough or want to make burp movements and burping to sort of "clear" my throat and make sure it's moisturized enough to swallow and burp

I guess what I'm worried about is, does the vapor just pass through the throat at a biologically tolerable temperature and all the sensations are from the chemicals themselves, or does the heat play a role and actually burn tissue and dries out the moisture from your throat.

Because I was under the impression that water contact with vapor basically guarantees it will be around room temperature vapor you inhale, but my throat very obviously does not feel like it felt 10 seconds ago when i breathed in normal air for the sake of breathing

The act of child sexual abuse IN OF ITSELF leads to trauma even without physical harm.
It is a horrible exploitation of power dynamics on someone at their most innocent stage in life.

>I lack lot in the empathy department
That's an understatement jesus christ. Seek help. If you attempt to have sexual relations with a child and think that because they're not "physically hurt" that it is okay, I can't fucking wait for you to be locked up for the rest of your life in a prison where all the inmates beat the shit out of you everyday for being a pedo.

>In the absence of physical harm, does child sexual abuse actually lead to trauma or is it the panicking parents and cops or something that is only traumatic in retrospect when the child is old enough to understand what happened and how society sees it?
Depends on the age group, really. CSE at a young age, is almost universally traumatic and not normal. Even insects know not to fuck the young. So any well-adjusted non-mentally ill person will look back on such events horror.

When you get older and a bit more cognisant, you get gray area. But the power difference in CSE often leads to exploitation of the child, which is where some of the trauma will stem from, and then you combine it with the acts of violation that they may have received in retrospect, it can be pretty damaging for the psyche. It's like a lot of the dumb things you did or were into as a teenager and look back on to cringe. Now imagine that cringe is a sweaty old man/woman that exploited your emotions to access your body for their own desires and not yours, it can be horrifying for a lot of people to look back on. Some especially precocious and mature teenagers may have been able to morally 'consent' before they were legally allowed, but our laws do not regard exceptions, only the majority, and teenagers are stupid.

Water absorbs more heat from the smoke than air does from the vape that has only passive aircoolijt secondary to your sucking. I couldn't even tell you what street they live on. Do you and others actually need more than a few friends? Just get along and have a few friends lmao, easy mode

Tbh, the CPOE systems that generates 10 pop ups for every medication order seems to make people disregard the interaction safe guards. (Cerner gang).
My personal order set populate at least 20 pop ups for interactions.
The notifications for abnormal labs for medications that aren’t dependent on those labs are tiresome too.
The worst of it all.... people inputting “allergies” into the medical record for narcotics and listing “sleepiness,” or antibiotic allergies that are mild sensitivities that no one bothered to investigate that generate hard stops from pharmacy makes this shit unbearable sometimes.

/med/ please advise (sorry about my English not first language):

Short: My right testicle is half the size of my left testicle. Current meds: Dutasteride

Longer: I did a cycle of steroids (test/anavar) 3 years ago, it lasted 3 months, cycled off with tamoxifen + HCG, testicles returned to "normal" size and testosterone production years later was normal had 2-3 tests done with ranging from 750-900ng/dL (I have been on dutasteride after cycle for hair). Only notable sides from dutasteride were weaker ejaculations but erection difficulties and other more common sides were not noted. However, in the last year or so I have noticed that one of my testicles is nearly comically smaller than the other. The right testicle is in volume more a little more than less than half in size. I am unsure if my left testicle has gotten larger or my right testicle has gotten too small. I do not see any varicocele and do not particularly feel any difference in either epididymis (although could be wrong). Could I be experiencing testicular atrophy due to my steroid usage from years ago/perhaps a sideeffect of dutasteride? Thoughts thanks.

define replicable? in medicine there are a lot of N=1 studies and they are simply not replicable because not everyone has the same diseases/issues going on. it's more of a case study rather than "look all people with this will behave this way".

a trans has been really into me lately and I'm not only worried, I'm almost expecting an ass full of cum with how enthusiastic the last few visits have been and where it pokes during cuddles sometimes. It's not huge, a little over 5 inches, but I am short, that would prob stretch the little "corner" behind the balls, you know, the little "hook" that leads a finger backwards into the prostate, it's not a real straight line, that part.

what's the medically safe and approved procedure for cleaning out all the shit in me and how to prep my anus so I won't have anal fissures, prolapsing, tears, and exploding friction hemorrhoids after the fact?

I wouldn't say a lot but there are those presented at congresses and some journals yes. But they are always considered anecdotal and you cannot generalize to a population from those, however in some rare disease you might feel like replicating treatments if success was achieved as it might still be better than what your original options for treatment were.

I would say over 90% of things normal GP's do are replicable and achieved from research results with n = 1000s and can be generalized with good confidence. Mostly things were cases are n < 10 are very rare genetic children's diseases.

you are not in the field and you have no idea what you are talking about. you just read some shitty article that says muh evil scientists are making things up and you bought it immediately. that might be the case for social science but not medicine or at least the majority of it. individual cases will simply never be replicable, that's not even the point of them. go look at all the commonly used medications and treatments like beta blockers, vasodillators, insulin, tumor removal surgery, endarterectomies, hernia surgeries, etc all work nearly 100% of the time (if properly diagnosed).
the actual problem that's not only in medicine but also all science is the use of simple linear paradigms instead of complex ones. the only reason behind this is that it would make all studies impossible to read for almost everyone except those on a very high academic level and many dimwits love muh renaissance scientific method and occam's razor
