Hello /sci/, I was conducting a theoretical thought experiment in my head, in preparation for the upcoming SATs. I feel like the SAT's will be important for me, so that i will be able to study engineering (please excuse bad english)

Anyway, the problem is, imagine you have two large spheres, about the size of the sun. However, one ball is made of ice and one made of fire (hot, in other words.) What would happen if they were to combine, with velocity (dilation not taken into account) 600 m/s??
Please, I need help with this. I made an answer but want to know what u guys think!!

>> No.6761879

I will say right now that nothing close to this will be on the SATs.

Ok, thanks for reply, but the SAT's are a reasoning test no?
Thus, i can correctly _reason_ that complicated thought experiments will help my score? I can effectively raise my IQ by simply practicing??

>>6761884

Correct, but the question you've asked will ultimately be determined by the science of how heat works, which is not reasoning.

>> No.6761888

They will merge into a sun-sized ball of water with the same mass as the ice ball. Since the fireball has no mass, just thermal energy, there will be no increase in mass. The kinetic energy of both balls will be dissipated into a miniscule amount of heat which is just enough to lift the average temperature slightly above 0° to make the ball liquid.

Fireball has no mass? Cleary a ball of fire which exists in space must be burning something which has mass
>>6761887
dont u think that if the brain exists in physical space and is part of the non-super reality, and thus a regular part of the world, that reasoning would be able to discover these so called "physical"laws of heat?

First of –1000°C is not a real temperature. The celsius scale only goes down to –273.15°C. Well, anyway. Let's assume you have one sphere that is 1000 K (1273.15°C) and one that is 0 K (–273.15°C). Let's assume there is no kind of fusion going on in either sphere, let's say they are both made of iron (iron can't do fusion etc). Now they clash together with 600 m/s, both the same mass. At some point some kind of mechanical equilibrium is reached, so that the two spheres are now combined into one with double mass. The temperature is 500 K + the kinetic energy of both. Assuming no kinetic energy transforms to rotational energy or is lost otherwise this would result to ∆T = M v^2/k_B with M mass/atom, speed v, Boltzmann constant k_B. In this example (M=56 u, v=600 m/s) yields ∆T=2426 K.
So in the the resulting sphere has a Temperature of T=2926 K.

>>6761902
Oh sorry, I did a mistake, I forgot a three. That means that ∆T = M v^2/(3 k_B) = 809 K, so the resulting temperature is only T = 1309 K.

You've put a new spin on it, kudos for that at least.

Think about the disparity in temperatures we are dealing with. you are seriously gonna tell me that NONE of the mass would be destroyed? Or at least some of the energy would be destroyed??

So much build up

To such an old troll concept.

And tripfagging while we're at it.

INTO the TRASH it GOES

Energy is conserved. I know that every day experience tells us that for example water can evaporate, but it's only seemingly gone. It just goes somewhere else. In this case the mass and energy has no other place to go. It needs to stay with the two masses.

For more information, visit SOME physics course somewhere. This is really really basic.

so you say this is a basic tenet of physics, but can you intuitively explain to me how this makes sense?? also when you say "visit" a physics course, what do you mean exactly? excuse my bad english

I like how when somehow actually tries to ask a serious science question, everyone on /sci/ just shouts LE TRELL!!!! OMG!!! instead of helping. and we wonder why people choose reddit instead.....
but anyway, EK, mass is conserved due to fundamental charges and forces that are created inside atoms. The same way everything has a YING and YANG, mass cannot be destroyed because this implies a non-idealogical YANG, whose being pressuposes the non-existence thereof.

Only high iq math/physics majors past their junior year will dare to even attempt answering OP's question.
