Why do people think mathematicians are more intelligent than physicists. I mean to me, a theoretical physicist gets to understand the workings of the universe. While a mathematician explores the subtleties of a language. I do not mean discredit the usefulness of mathematics, that is not my purpose. I think mathematics is by war the most useful tool we have got. But people around here seem to think that proving a result about p adic numbers somehow makes you a "god", or operating on some higher plane of existence. Shouldn't Physics take that position? As it actually answers the very existence of the universe. What’s more, physicists are better mathematicians than mathematicians are physicists. You can be a mathematician without knowing any physics, but you MUST know quite a bit of high level math in THEORETICAL physics.

I see mathematicians as the servants, the squires and the caddies of the physicist. Discuss.

I think its wrong to depict math as a tool.

I dont want to sound crazy, but, its the one true area of work. Math, and logic in general, are unique in that they are undoubtedly true in their claims. I dont think anything else can hold that title, not even physics. Its almost like math precedes reality.

As soon as you start looking at reality, problems arise. You get measurement error, and constraints, ,problems of induction and just stuff that plain dont make sense. Everything, including physics, becomes this modeled false-representation.

And physicists in general are just kind of retarded. They boast their passion to find answers to find answers about the universe, but I think they brag that because its an insecurity to begin with. Its a mask to hide the fact that understanding the physical universe is not, in fact, some deep rooted human need.

MATHS ISNT A FUCKING LANGUAGE.

I know your retarded school system no doubt told you otherwise, but please understand that there is nothing true about this whatsoever.

None of that has anything to do with how intelligent either is.

But, I think mathematicians are smarter on average, only because "physics" is a very broad term that includes a lot of work that is more like engineering. Theoretical anything is hard as fuck.

What you're referring to as Physics, is in fact, Mathematics/Physics, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Mathematics plus Physics. Physics is not a subject unto itself, but rather another application of a fully functioning mathematics system made useful by the mathematicians, their works and vital contributions comprising a full subject as defined by the academic world.

Many physicists use a modified version of the mathematics system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the types of mathematics which are widely used today is often called "Physics", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the mathematics system, developed by the countless mathematicians.

There really is physics, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Mathematics is the base: the foundation in the system that allocates the physicist's resources to the other applications that you may need. Those applications are essential parts of our universe, but useless by themselves; it can only function in the context of a complete system. Physics is normally used in combination with the mathematics system: the whole system is basically mathematics with physics added, or mathematics/physics. All the so-called "Physics" applications are really applications of mathematics/physics.

As a mathematician (who doesn't believe myself better than physicists...) let me address a few points.

Firstly, a more polite version of >>4749788

Secondly
>As it actually answers the very existence of the universe
Maths answers questions not only about our universe, but everything else as well.

>What’s more, physicists are better mathematicians than mathematicians are physicists
That's not so, for example I've never studied any physics yet I've worked in projects that might have me labelled as a 'physicist', in that I was 'doing physics', physics that most physicists aren't equipped to do. This is not to say that mathematicians are better at physics than physicists are at mathematics, just an example of how its not quite so black and white.

>I see mathematicians as the servants, the squires and the caddies of the physicist.
Can be true, but it can also be looked at as mathematicians pass things off to physicists once we're bored with them. Such analogies aren't really good for much. Besides this there's a great deal of maths (even applied maths) which is entirely separate of physics.

>Why do people think mathematicians are more intelligent than physicists

Because most of them are, and ever good physicist is also a mathematican.
