/sci/, what's the point?

Of anything?

We live...and then what happens?
We die...and then what happens?
Humanity will one day perish...and then what happens?
Even if we survive and meet other more advanced beings...what happens?
If we merge with all other life and form a godlike, transcendent being, and learn everything there is to know...what happens then?

Nothing. There is no point...to anything.

Can you tell I'm having a bad day? What gets you through days like I'm having, /sci/?

A pessimist once said: "The point of life is to learn why it would have been better to not have been born in the first place.---or again--- "The goal of life is to learn to not want it."

Purpose is lacking. No one is denying that, or at any rate, denying it with success. The vanity of existence is overcome temporarily by keeping a healthy mind. Morbid preoccupations, habits, manners of living, etc. conduct to a morbid though-disposition, and eventually a despair at the pointlessness of it all.

This despair is particular to men, it will be observed. Because woman lives almost entirely in the present moment, she is for the greater part immune to that particular class of despair that afflicts thoughtful man, being as he is occupied with thoughts of the past and future.

Not a bad way to kill 30 minutes:

ITT: Babby's First Nihilism

What is the point of playing any video game? After you finish doing the main and side quests there's nothing left to do.
Reality is much the same except the programming of the game is far simpler which interestingly leads to a far wider range of possibilities. Think of reality as a game with practically unlimited map space and no rules except physics.
Humanity will one day perish, it is likely. However you yourself acknowledge this is depressing and you imply you'd rather that this not happen. The reason why you, I, and life exists is because it can exist.

Reality is ultra-Minecraft. There is no real storyline, and for this very reason it is immensely interesting.

It is fairly possible we are just some simulation of beings we cannot comprehend. So lets screw the simulation up. Moon them all.

Logically, life has no meaning. That's the end result of logic. We will all die, this will all end, there is no point in the end.

But why put so much concern in what's logical?

After all, we can find meaning, we can find purpose, we can cope with knowing the end with illogical thinking. Finding happiness in producing something, even though it'll vanish. Finding meaning in seeking truth, even though no one will know in the end. Being illogical brings us these.

>Nothing. There is no point...to anything.
And that is the most beautiful thing about being human.
You live, and just by that you are one of the lucky ones. One of the numberless legion of possible humans, no, possible lifeforms, of which an infinite amount never even see life. Just by having a pulse you beat all the odds.

You die, as all things will, and you become one again with those beings who never were and never will be. You follow the best and worst human beings, and you precede all of existence.

Humanity will one day perish, for we are nothing but a blip on the Radar. We are nothing, insignificant. Simply by existing as a species we are defying a cold, uncaring universe. That universe, which encompasses all that ever was, is, and will be, has conspired against us, and we defy it, but our defiance is not eternal, but it is brief and it is infinite.

Nothing. There is no point to anything, and this is liberating. There is no higher purpose, no cosmic sense of justice, or right or wrong, of ought or ought not. We exist merely because our existence is possible, and as the oft quotes poem states:
"It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul."

We are all captains of our souls. Of our ambition, and of our lives, brief though they may be. Who among us finds this saddening, that we are free, truly free, in the cosmic sense? Who among those reading this would rather be in bondage to an eternal constant, or be chained by fate or destiny?

"If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" ~ Carl Sagan.

The trick of course is to solve the problem before it becomes a problem.

Find out what causes black holes to randomly appear inside of people, and find a way to prevent it before it actually happens. Again, with simulated perfect realities even on a small scale where we can experience more subjective time than in the real world, this would be trivial to accomplish.

And by trivial I mean only near-impossible.

But hell, we're all thermodynamic miracles anyways. May as well try to beat the odds twice.

It's certainly better than the alternative. And while we're on the subject of Enlisgh poets, as I noticed someone posting Invictus...

When observing anything, we make several assumptions. All of which basically boil down to assuming that the universe isn't trying to deceive us. Therefore, when we observe things in nature, we can infer patterns in them. We can predict other things, and we can use those predictions. That is the scientific method. I may as well ask you "Why do you assume that what you are seeing right now is really happening? How do you know we aren't a computer simulation?"

The answer is you really can't. You HAVE to assume some things, because the alternative, if true, doesn't really change anything. That is why we all assume that the laws of the observable universe are the same everything. And if they aren't and we discover that, we can change our model but until then, positing the question you posited is just meaningless intellectual circlejerking.

OP here, surprised the thread has survived until morning, despite being hijacked -_-'

A few thinigs:

1. I was having a philosophical dilemma, not a scientific one. I understand heat death, the possibility of life extension, etc.

2. My point was that even if we achieve immortality in the absolute sense, that is, the theoretical situation where all live in the universe merges into one super-sentient being, and then, using the godlike intelligence available to us, be able to escape heat death by some unknown means (by halting the process or traveling to another dimension, or creating a "bubble" and creating our own, new universe, etc.). But again, whether it can be done or not, I was just conjecturing.

3. And in response to >>3052275 :
You've basically hit the heart of what I was trying to get at. We humans have the ability to feel amazing and to have fun, to do extraordinary things, but we also feel the crushing insignificance of our existence. If a being were to come about that had not one, but billions of consciences within it (let's just say), it would have billions of times the capacity to be happy and do extraordinary things...but wouldn't it also have billions of times the capacity to feel the burden of existence with no meaning? Wouldn't it actually be WORSE for that being than it is for us?

>> No.3053715

>>3053691
And by the way, the reason I keep using the "merging consciences" example is not necessarily because I think that's what will happen...it's one minute possibility among many, many, many possible outcomes. I chose that example because it's the most extreme end I could think of, the one where humankind reached its absolute peak, its highest zenith (any end that has us reach infinite knowledge and infinite power suffices for the point I'm making).

Listen. What do you feel like doing? Do it. Grab an iPod or another mp3 player, don't care about your choice, and go for a walk. Buy something. Smoke a joint. Drink alcohol. Just don't do anything that gets you depressed. tl;dr, Do whatever the fuck you want.

Pretty much this.

Best way to go is set yourself a goal and figure out how to overcome any obstacles

Humans enjoy challenges. The worst thing existentially for us is boredom and apathy.

>> No.3053920

You are correct that there is no point to anything and no deep meaning or anything like that.

If this is a problem perhaps you should consider becoming a christian or islamic or something.

You were only given the opportunity to experience all of this because countless others had to die without anywhere near your level of opportunity (in other words, they died in their 20s so you could live until 70)

Don't thank Jesus for dying for us. Thank millions of humans and other species throughout natural history.

Sadly, you can't thank those people and creatures for what they unknowingly did for you. The best thing is to do exactly what they did. For the future! (whatever that involves)
