What they're trying to say is this: Counting those who believe in divinely driven evolution and purely natural evolution, 60 percent of Americans believe in evolution. Also, Catholicism does not consider evolution to be in conflict with Scripture, therefore the local priest is not admonishing his flock against the evils of Darwinism. Most forms of Protestantism consider evolution wholly incompatible with Scripture, and we are a Protestant country. If evolution is true, Genesis is false, or at least must be read as a parable-therefore our pastors, who insist that Genesis is literally true, urge us to reject evolution entirely. If Catholicism rejected evolution, I guarantee you that 88 percent would be a lot lower.
