We discuss research, offer advice (the best one is to see your family physician), make fun of premeds and shitpost.

Do not engage the clamp poster (https://pastebin.com/aYNv0zFc).).

Don't start discussing pro- and anti-vax shit because it degenerates and takes a lot of replies.

Look I don't know your life and shit but I studied maybe four hours a day for 3 weeks and scored a 520. I understand the desire for max potential but you may be better served by preserving your mental health and actually being a presentable candidate at the interview. You might be some kind of genius that could make a 528 but anything beyond a 521 does not matter for literally any medical school, and you would do better for having learned spanish or something.

Also, if you are capable of getting a 528, which is something only serious talent and hardwork could achieve, be prepared to be incredibly disappointed with your classmates, who will not be as smart or hardworking as you may expect.

that's awesome dude. You're clearly much smarter than I am. Part of the reason why I'm studying as much and as far out as I am is because I know I'm not naturally smart or exceptionally talented. >> No.10936389

Just think about why you are doing this. If it is to help people, you clearly have enough dedication right now to do it, and if that is the case, know that 512 (83rd pecentile), especially with a 4.0, is enough to guarantee acceptance to a state medical school. This also means you should take some breaks and enjoy social opportunities when they come. Avoid thinking in terms of "Oh I will be happy after this MCAT/interview/test" because becoming a physician means that there will be no end to the next stressful thing. Focus on finding happiness in the moments, because the journey will never be over.

If you are doing this for greatness or prestige, reconsider things. There is no greatness in medicine except after years and years of work, being not only smart but also a good person to your patients. A dream being great will not last you.

Shootings: 5 or 6, 2 were fatal, including one child

Earlier as I was walking my penis went numb and began to rapidly shrink up into me to the point where it looked as if I had no shaft and the head was level with the skin at the base. It was terrifying and lasted a couple minutes before it went away. I wasn't cold and hadn't been doing anything unusual. Simply got up from reading at the dinner table and was heading towards the door to walk the dog. What happened?

is this the thread to ask? if not, sorry
looking for advice on a botched toe
history: my toenails fall off every few months-every few years; doctors ran tests when i was a kid and said they didn’t know what was wrong. it all started after a stage board at school was dropped on them at school. i think maybe the thing that makes the nail grow (matrix?) is damaged in both big toes or something.
fast forward to recently:
for uni grad pics my mom wanted me to look nice and get a pedicure with fake toenails. i got one; stubbed my right toe nail and it was bruised/bloody. removed the acrylic nail with a nail drill; natural nail fell off on its own a month later. perfectly fine now.
left nail still had the acrylic nail on and i stubbed it as well with no blood but was sore. tried to do the same process on it, but couldn’t remove all of the acrylic nail and ended up skimming some of the skin on the toe bed. it’s been like this for a while and i want it to come off already; nail and the bit of acrylic remaining.
also: i have had 2 nails removed by doctors before; both of them left trauma to the toe. in one instance the whole nail was ripped off with no numbing and i couldn’t walk for several days, the other instance the doctor wrapped the toe with the wrong gauze which healed into the wound and i had to pull bits of gauze out from my skin, causing me to distrust doctors near my toes.
but i still seek some advice on what to do if anyone has ideas on how to help naturally remove the nail pictured.
i have been soaking in epsom salt.

you can go to trade school right out of high school and weld pipelines for 125$ an hour if you luck out, but the work is fucking arduous and grates away at both your physical and mental health.
the same goes for medical doctors, even nurses in certain fields. if it's six in the morning and you've been operating for the last ten hours, and the patient dies, and now you've got to worry about a malpractice suit, and you're worrying about every document you signed recently and every report you read and everything you said to the patient.

that's an extreme example of course, it's more like it's the weekend and you're on call and you have to rush up at 4 in the morning, but it's ALL of it. it all piles up on you and just fucking grinds you down over and over. it's like the sword of fucking damocles sometimes.

if you've got a free ride, by all means go for it. but if you're putting yourself in debt to become a doctor, it's going to take a while until you break even with someone who was working 8 years before you even started.

I have that. Presumably you're using soap with hot water, that destroys the protective acid mantle on the surface of the skin and the water increases skin permeability, those two things tend to irritate sensitive skin. You could try cooling off the water, switch to an unscented, uncolored bar soap/minimize soap, and just don't take showers so damn much

Yeah, the passing grade is 10 out of 20, but to be competitive and get into second year you have to get a much higher score (it’s a bit lower for pharma and dentistry, but still very difficult overall)
Those who fail can directly get into a second year of a bachelor’s degree of their choosing (pretty much anything scientific, since 1st year med school here has a lot of physics and chem just for the sake of making things harder).
So those who fail aren’t completely fucked, but it’s still harsh. You get one try at your dream and if you fail, sucks to be you I guess.

So, I've been on pediatrics for a bit this summer and I had the chance to visit the peds surg ward. I've found out that 3 of the attendings weren't actually working there but they came from US to practice here?? I've asked the doctor I shadowed why they came exactly to Romania and he just replied with: "To get more experience, they only do 2 or 3 types of surgeries there in which they specialize, they just want to broaden their area of expertise a bit" - Not exactly the quote but something along the lines.

Is it true that murican surgeons do only 2 or 3 types of procedures and "specialize" in them? Let's say for ortho -> hand surgeries only, etc? I'm asking this because so far, every surgeon I met operated a huge variety of sufferings (Especially gen surg/peds surg)

Hey guys.

Any orthopedic bros in here?
So, when I curl my right knee all the way (as in when I squat, or do a flamingo stretch) it kind of hurts. I can feel that somethings not right. My left knee joint doesn't hurt at all.

I used to be able to pop my knees by stretching them that way, but now my right knee refuses to pop, it just extremely hurts when I try, so obviously I don't do that anymore.

My joint only hurts when curled like this, normal activities don't cause any pain at all.

Any idea what part of my knee I fucked to caused this?
Is there anything that can be done to heal it?

Been there for a few months as internship, so not some ultra expert but anyway. The same cycles of therapy over and over, the same little complications. Since it's structured as a multi unit together with surgeons and all other specialits reunions are relatively interesting compared to an internal briefing. Some rare tumors and rare presentations so you get to examinate a few peculiar clinical presentations. Probably as repetitive as any other field. Research is more interesting than non oncology fields, probably.
A lot of it depends on your center, how big it is and its quality and specialization.
Personally i think the psicological aspects are completly forgotten by clinics and everything is left to psicologists. Most terminal patients don't even know they are about to die but apparently this is the very standard approach in souther europe, opposed to the anglo style where they tell you everything down to the point of being traumatic (if any anglosphere med could confirm it would also be interesting to talk about).
So, good: interesting topics; very variable clinical presentations; job won't lack; research good; social respect; biodrugs field starting to work good might make them boss in the future (wild bet tho).
Downs: patients come with the diagnosis so it's not like it's challenging in that, you just adjust therapy (which is challenging); might end up as closet palliativist depending on the center; surgeons and radiotp stealing your job and generally preferred over onc to the public; might consume you over time; repetitive and frustrating to see your patients always die after a couple decades of work exp.
