Picture unrelated.

Fun little formula for squaring two digit numbers without a calculator, with a little practice, you can do it mentally with no problem. I'm positive i'm not the first person to come up with something like this, but it's useful nonetheless.

Take any two digit number;

27 in this case.

27^2 = x

Step 1) Find the nearest tens boundary, and let it be "b", in this case, 30.

Step 2a) If b > a; b-a=d
Step 2b) If b < a; a-b=d

Step 3a) a-d=c
Step 3b) a+d=c

Step 4) c(b) + d^2 = x

This may all seem a little confusing, but practice it a few times, and you'll be able to do it in the blink of an eye. Enjoy ;)

Got my first calculus test back.

I got 1 question wrong.

The question was "the derivative can be used to find the slope of the tangent at any point on a function".

I said FALSE.

I got it wrong.

I asked why - my reasoning being that it only works on points where the function is differentiable - for example, you can't derive the vertex of f(x) = |x|^2.

He said the assumption was that the function was differentiable.

I mad.
