When asked why they were out of work for so long, each and every one of them used the war as an excuse, despite 2 of them being the age where they can fight. At any moment when questioned about their personal responsibilities or asked what they want to do in life, they somehow managed to answer about how the war has ruined their life and it's not their fault, despite not once being accused of any blame. They literally shoehorned it in every conversation. The topic of videogames came up and one said "before the war I loved playing videogames, but now they bring back bad memories." Everyone in the room except for those who hardly spoke English sat around nodding their head solemnly. It's genuinely a joke how Russia has mindbroken ever Ukranian into becoming a bumbling retard.

Sure. I do want to clear up a couple of points.
1. The people are free in a sense of the west vs east sphere of influence. Obviously, the people are subjugated by their own government and that has been the case for a very long time so a truly free Russian is a seldom case and mostly emerges as an oligarch, but even then strings are attached.
2. Reflection in state policies will not happen because of the nuclear triad, and even it did from their perspective it'd just be another round of being subjugated. As in the policies would work only while the power that's on their neck is there. I don't think that's because the people are retarded, but because the people are jaded by getting fucked over time and time again.

The question is what we mean by "Ukrainian writer". If we consider Ukraine an organic part of Russia, then yes, Gogol had some relation to this entity.
If by Ukraine you mean a separate country with its own language unrelated to Russia, then Gogol is irrelevant to this tradition, as he lived in Saint Petersburg since his youth, wrote on standard Russian (instead of southern dialect) and had a very loyal attitude to authorities of Russian Empire, which had representation in his books (see "Taras Bulba", about cosacks fighting against Poland (bad guys) in order to side with Russia (good orthodox guys).
This is why Ukrainian activists in inner discourse never accept him as his own and call him "Peterburg shill". The most recognized Ukrainian authors are Taras Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Olesya Pchilka.
