Bro, the chariot of your soul will never be able to ascend to the heights of gnosis if reason, the charioteer, cannot train the horses that pull it (appetites and passions). It's not enough to be continent and to force yourself to act in accordance with what you truly think is best. This is a miserable way to live, perhaps more unpleasant than being ruled over by your vices as a slave to instinct, desire, and circumstance. Rather, you must break these horses and train them so that your eros and love is for the Good, the Beautiful, and the True. Virtue is the enjoyment of righteousness (Aristotle). Plato even talks about wanting to couple with the Good (it's as sexual a phrase in the Greek). True freedom is actuality, the ability to actualize the Good and "give birth in beauty," to what is best.

Get back on the horse, break the chains, and ascend. The man who finds his happiness in worldly, mutable things can always lose them to Fortune. Look what happened to Boethius, who had it all. Only the man who turns his gaze to the immutable, to what is not good only in virtue of its relation to something else, can withstand any fortune. The closer one comes to the center, to Providence, the less one is cast about by fate, a mere effect of external causes.
