Reading his shit feels like I'm watching a fucking anime. The characters speak and behave incredibly autistically, I can literally picture them in my mind as anime characters and the dialogue fits. They go on 2-page monologues and speeches where they reveal every single one of their thoughts and motivations, rather than just making a point and allowing the other person to respond. It feels so unnatural, like it's written by a super autistic person imagining what conversations are like.
I've read read other classics that aren't like this, is it just a Russian thing or was Dosto an actual sperg? I read Garnett translation if that matters.

>NOOO THE DIALOGUE MUST BE NATURAL LIKE MY REAL LIFE, IN WHICH PEOPLE ARE FUN LUSH FLOWING FEELINGS-BLOBS AND EVERYBODY'S HAPPY AND EVERYTHING'S FINE!!! AGGGGHHHH NOVELS SHOULD BE A CELEBRATION OF THE ENDLESS "REAL CANCUN (2003)" THAT IS LIFE!!!! LIFE IS A CORNUCOPIA OF FIZZY SENSATIONS INTERPENETRATING AND OVERFLOWING POROUS DISUBJECTIVITIES FUSING INTO ONE IMPERSONAL SUPERBEING OF ORGONES, WHEN I DRIV EIN THE CAR AND LISTEN TO "THE CHAINSMOKERS" I FEEL COMPLETE!!! THE FEELINGS OF BEING ANALLY RAPED ARE NATURAL EXTENSIONS OF THE SOCIAL AND ROMANTIC TENSION I FELT THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT AT THE "PARTY" WHERE I SELECTED MY FUTURE ASSFUCKER THE WAY ONE USES A DOWSING ROD TO FIND LEYLINES OR A OUIJA BOARD TO CONTACT A SPIRIT!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DOSTOEVSKY NOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T USE A TRISYLLABIC WORD, THE MAN WHO MADE ME SMILE AND EVOKED ANIMALISTIC LUST FACES IN ME AT THE "PARTY" WHILE I CLUTCHED AN INEBRIANT NEVER SAID WORDS LIKE THAT AGGGHHHHHHHHHHH THIS IS OVERWHELMING ME I NEED A "WHITE CLAW"

You could have just said that it is not designed to be read naturalistically; and I have to wonder if you didn‘t because you‘re either not willing to defend that on concept or in application. I can‘t quite wrap my head around the real spergout pretending to be a fake one and find it pathetic.

I enjoyed Dosto but I thought the same when reading him. Imagine doing this IRL. Imagine going to a prostitute but instead of fucking her you enter into a 10 page fedora monologue. You'd get the cops called on you for being a massive sperg lord. Exposing women to intellectualism is a crime worse than rape.

they are living in the 1800s, where things like politeness, custom, and eloquence is more common, and movies did not exist. Hell, your retarded ass would probably think everyone in the 20s was autistic if you could go there.

If you are alluding to Dostoevsky’s worst novels, then, indeed, I dislike intensely The Brothers Karamazov and the ghastly Crime and Punishment rigamarole. No, I do not object to soul-searching and self-revelation, but in those books the soul, and the sins, and the sentimentality, and the journalese, hardly warrant the tedious and muddled search. Dostoyevsky’s lack of taste, his monotonous dealings with persons suffering with pre-Freudian complexes, the way he has of wallowing in the tragic misadventures of human dignity – all this is difficult to admire. I do not like this trick his characters have of ”sinning their way to Jesus” or, as a Russian author, Ivan Bunin, put it more bluntly, ”spilling Jesus all over the place." Crime and Punishment’s plot did not seem as incredibly banal in 1866 when the book was written as it does now when noble prostitutes are apt to be received a little cynically by experienced readers. Dostoyevsky never really got over the influence which the European mystery novel and the sentimental novel made upon him. The sentimental influence implied that kind of conflict he liked—placing virtuous people in pathetic situations and then extracting from these situations the last ounce of pathos. Non-Russian readers do not realize two things: that not all Russians love Dostoevsky as much as Americans do, and that most of those Russians who do, venerate him as a mystic and not as an artist. He was a prophet, a claptrap journalist and a slapdash comedian. I admit that some of his scenes, some of his tremendous farcical rows are extraordinarily amusing. But his sensitive murderers and soulful prostitutes are not to be endured for one moment—by this reader anyway. Dostoyevsky seems to have been chosen by the destiny of Russian letters to become Russia’s greatest playwright, but he took the wrong turning and wrote novels.

A soliloquy can be fine, but the way Dosto writes them is insufferable. Every character is manic and gets carried away in the most melodramatic ways. It's like a cheap soap opera with poor actors.

He's writing to the specific type of person or audience that would most likely be reading novels at the time. It would be fun for them to imagine a world where people just dump their introspective thoughts on each other stored up from being an introverted wordcel. It's more fun in a world where everyone argues about the type of big ideas you would read from a book or newspaper. That's why the underground man 'talks like a book'.

If you're talking about C&P then shouldn't you take issue with the entire premise rather than just how the protagonist acts in that situation? Because Sonja wasn't just a prostitute, she was a noble, religious woman who sacrificed her body so her siblings could have something to eat. If you can accept this premise, then there is nothing weird at all about Raskolnikov wanting to talk and confide in her, rather than just wanting to fuck her.

Dosto is essentially sadomasochistic, he loves dwelling on characters who revel in how depraved they are, but who also prostrate themselves in the just punishment or humiliation of their depravity. Again, sensitive murderers and soulful prostitutes imply the exact situation he adored, all the violence and sexual intrigue he desired so much, but with the approval of his super ego since they ritualistically degrade themselves in a kind of spiritual fetishistic pleasure in confessing, being punished, and then being "redeemed". It's lurid and partakes of a sick kind of gratification in self flagellation.

Give it leeway for artistic license.

Can you imagine being an author trying to work the whole personal philosophy of Primus into a conversation, and having Secundus respond with perfect questions like a catechism?

That's only slightly less artificial; Wilde tried it and it was still fake and clunky.

Just treat it as a morality play, anon. In other words, accept it as anime. Expecting hardboiled Spillane realism j/bc the setting is grungy is kinda autistic tho. Go soft on the brakes anon
