Do you find being hypercritical of your work useful in improving? Or is it a useless trait that should be phased out

did you draw this?

no, i drew it

Self-critique, learning to recognize what you need to work on and how to do it, is useful. Learning how to recognize your successes is useful too, both mentally and so you know how to take what you did right and keep going. Hating your work excessively, for no good reason, is not useful. I know somebody who would say "it's shit" or "I hate it" every single time they posted something and it got annoying really quickly, plus they never improved.

Learning to be extremely critical of myself has significantly contributed to me improving, so I think it's a good thing. However, it's important to not be so critical that engaging with art becomes something you dread.

Like >>7149700 said, be critical but also enjoy when you've done something successfully. Use the satisfactory feeling of your successes as motivation to chase even further success.

Normal criticism (I didn't flip the canvas, I forgot to add shading, I draw too many anime girls, I never draw anything new etc.) is valid.
Hypercrit is fucking worthless and useless. It's brainworms and mental illness that leads you to self-sabotage or demoralization.

That sort of mentality has its place when studying, but you're going to demoralize yourself if do it for every single drawing.

>> No.7151440

I dont crit myself because nothing I draw can be good, it just goes against the laws of physics. I aim for "good enough".

I hate everything I make and I hate seeing art so much. It's like a knife in my heart. I dont understand how to study or improve. I work at a fucking glacial pace. Any improvement I make is hard earned over years. I don't understand how everyone seemingly becomes a master in 2-3 years. I hope someday I'll feel less intensely towards familial obligations so that I may escape this torture with the only inheritence to my name (a Ruger P90 .45)

Just wanted to say, those are some nice breasts you did.

>> No.7156003

I think hypercritical by definition is an excess of critique that hurts more than helps. There's no scale of how critical is too critical, but if you've gone from considering it being hypercritical rather than just critical than you should probably take a reel it in a bit.

You can say that again. The art itself isn't that good but the subtexts are boner inducing as fuck
