The coin is not needed though. In crypto you make money out of narrative and hype. The underlying tech is just one aspect but surely not the most important. Retail doesn't care about chainlink, instutions don't care as well = dead coin

How do you gather that the token isn't needed? It seems to me CCIP definitely needs the token, even if you could argue that before that the token wasn't used for much apart from VRF and Keepers payments.

We said this in 2021, I literally held all the way down to 4$ because in 2018 link didn't moon with the rest but started moving in 2019, I just couldn't imagine how shiba would moon and link wouldn't, really underestimated the clown market and zoomer retardation.
I'm basically in the same boat as OP, holding since 2017 destroyed me, swung a little in 2019 on harmony, fantom, matic, etc to increase stack size, but had I held any of those, I'd be in 8 figures, fantom bought early on idex, harmony and matic the second they started trading on binance (launchpad projects). so yeah there is no way I can watch it dump again like the massacre of 2022, and I had the energy to invest on shitcoins but I just feel behind on that shit, used to be /biz/ would shill them really early, now you have to be on twitter non stop, but seeing harrypotteromabadogetc. do those x multiplier gains just depresses me.
I know it will moon as soon as I sell though.

Disclaimer: I usually fud. You should take note of these feelings and understand that this is the desired result. The market makers play these mind games and do whatever they can to make you sell. They use the chart to manipulate your emotions and try to psychologically break you so that you capitulate. Financial movements don't actually have anything to do with the underlying company / assets, it's all Just human psychology.
Whenever moments like this come where everyone is fudding and everyone is dooooming, it's usually a bottom signal or calm before the storm. I'm an OG and I successfully bought the pico bottom when link was sub $5 using this metric. Link actually has an amazing narrative coming up with cross chain interoperability and RWA tokenizarion. People are just anxious from the CCIP delays. Don't forget LINK was what kicked off the entire Defi bullrun in 2020, history doesn't repeat but it sure does rhyme.
Link is hands down the most manipulated crypto, just look at the bear market where it ranged sideways perfectly, none of the other alts exhibit this same pattern, Remember how BTC kept mysteriously dumping every time link had news or was breaking out?
The crazy link run in 2020 did not start until they released the mainnnet update. I'm guessing that the entity that's been suppressing link and accumulating is waiting for a catalyst before they let it run along with the brand new narrative, that's probably CCIP.
The people suppressing link do so with the intention of eventually selling it for much more, only link has the potential to actually displace and sideline bitcoin.
Just make sure to take profits this time, you might not want to once euphoria kicks in, it's entirely up to you if you want to wait another 4 years. I think for many of us OGs, it's about time we bought our own houses..

I'm too scared to sell LINK only to watch it pump past 100$ without me, but at the same time the horrible performance is making me suicidal, I swear if I miss another bull run and my opportunity to escape the wage cage because of LINK I'll have to go to a mental asylum

This is why LINK doesn't pump. It will probably take several more years for anything to change. Unless LINK moves violently upward independently of BTC and the rest of the market I am selling everything before EOY 2025 and buying again after the market cools off. Basically it would take LINK being Top-5 or 6 and ahead of both Shib and Doge for me to keep hodling. Those are the biggest tells that the market is still idiotic, they are total shitcoins. Make sure to sell and take profits if you see those two above LINK as we near the end of 2025. Be grateful that there are such obvious tells that everything will dump.
