This has been a national security consideration ever since they turned off buying for a significant portion of retail traders. If any big firm still has a short position left, if they tried to close it, citadel securities (market marker not hedge fund) would be the one selling their fake shares as usual to absorb the short. That is the most difficult aspect of this entire thing, is effectively carving out winners and losers and covering up evidence for the winners and letting nature take its course by allowing the losers to collapse and the court system to handle the rest. There will be major macro geopolitical events around the time GMe/BBBy and RC and friends ultimate plans are allowed to take hold. Hope for soon but expect serious delays most likely being very close to the election time.
