That's a good way of looking at it. There definitely has been a shift in what it takes to have some financial comfort, even 10-20 years ago all it took was buying a house and paying it off and you're pretty much golden for retirement. Nowadays, it's invest in the riskiest equities and investments in the hopes your savings don't get devalued to shit, and if you get lucky enough to save for a down payment you spend all your money trying to pay it down while living with roommates and hope interest rates don't get jacked up.
