how did/does nintendo manage to maintain dominance over handhelds? i get them beating out sega and atari, the lynx and the game gear were out of their technological depth with the ridiculous size, washed out screens, and battery issues, but the wonderswan color and the neo geo pocket color were both solid competitors. like look at the feature set:

wonderswan color:
>ports of square games that were at the time definitive, and still hold up as good conversions years later
>20 hour battery life on a single AA
>mail order homebrew devkit that was used to make the best original games on the system, dicing knight and judgement silversword, as well as hobbyist gps applications and stuff
>extremely good hardware design (from gunpei yokoi), worked in horizontal and vertical orientations and feels sturdy while being incredibly easy to disassemble and reassemble
>graphical capabilities that rival the GBA
>some games even connected to the internet through a cell phone

neo geo pocket color:
>god tier stick and buttons
>40 goddamn hours of play on two AAs
>most import games will run in english on consoles set to english, something that basically no other console at that time did
>library is about 50% absurdly high quality games, 50% slot machine games for some reason
>snk bringing legitimately great fighting games to a portable that don't feel like a massive step down from arcade versions
>reflective display, but much better viewing angles and colors than competitors
>wireless peripheral allowed for 64 player multiplayer in games like dive alert
>original games like dark arms, faselei, and battle de paradise that were extremely high quality

the gameboy color was a great console, sure, but what kind of magic was nintendo using to completely obliterate the competition like they did? there's no reason that these two should've failed.

neither of them were particularly high end hardware though, they were both around the same price point. the wonderswan was cheaper. in terms of toughness, the wonderswan beats out the gbc handily. the things are built super sturdily and borderline impossible to break or lose bits to. the removable bit that covers the battery is also the battery holder, so you'll never lose it. seriously take on apart at some point, you'll be amazed compared to any other older handhelds.
both of them pretty much had everything the gbc had except maybe brand recognition, but with snk that shouldn't really be a problem.

I don’t think the Virual Boy was exactly his fault. It when more like:

Nintendo: release it anyway!

So it was a Sega situation then?

How come Big Blue gets so much flak for the Saturn when Big Red was doing pretty much exactly the same thing? They gimped the N64s video output and memory system too due to fear of being way too late entering the 5th gen.

they should have delayed the release since they wouldn't want it to take away the shine from the n64, if they had have released it 2 years after the n64 it could have been used to revive the n64 since it would be considered new and high tech.

The wonderswan was awesome, but I think maybe NOT GETTING RELEASED OUTSIDE OF JAPAN might have had an impact on its lifetime.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color had amazing games and third party support, but as soon as Aruze bought out SNK, they also immediately canceled all remaining NGPC games (including a new metal slug, chu chu rocket, windjammers, magician lord, arc the lad, a porn game, Mortal Kombat, Popolocrois, Intelligent Qubes, tons of english localizations, and more) and development of the system. So while it was about to become the best handheld of all time, some shitty fucking slot machine company that made the slot games OP mentioned ruined the whole thing.

Don't forget to email Aruze and tell them you hate them.

The RPG and Fighter bases largely didn't give a shit about handhelds.
Gameboy appealed to platformerfags who did, and then created an entirely new base with pokemania.

Nintendo didn't release two home consoles at the same time. Virtual Boy is a portable.

It was kinda bullshit that Game Boy Color was released so soon after Pocket. I would have waited another couple months to play Pokémon had I been more informed. Didn't want to be lugging around the old brick (in green because it's what mom got us)

I got to play with my brother's Color at least.

Also, maybe those consoles got too late to the party. Kids and families already knew about the "Game Boy", even those who weren't gamers. Being released in the late 90s, Nintendo just had a much more huge and solid lineup of games.

Then, Pokemon would appear and that ended the portable console war.

Cool blog little bro. If only you'd been born when the WSC came out you might have tipped the scales in it's favor. The magic Nintendo used was having thousands of games instead of a handful. Amazing how such a simple concept has gone from common sense to rocket science to magic in a single degeneration.

I think marketing is a big reason. As a kid I wasn't even aware any handhelds existed other than Game Boy and Game Gear. It wasn't until I was much older (as in, within the last 5-10 years) that I learned there was this whole world of other handhelds out there.

Too little too late in the case of the Wonderswan. Neo Geo Pocket never left Japan.

Despite Nintendo's release of the Game Boy Color five months before, Bandai remained confident that the WonderSwan and its monochromatic screen would perform well because the original black-and-white Game Boy had previously been more successful than its color-screen competitors, the Sega Game Gear and Atari Lynx, on the basis of its battery life and the quality of its game library
Before the WonderSwan Color could be released, however, Nintendo announced the Game Boy Advance, which featured superior hardware.
Units sold 3.50 million (combined)
1.55 million (WonderSwan)
1.1 million (WonderSwan Color)

The Neo Geo Pocket is a monochrome handheld game console released by SNK. It was the company's first handheld system and is part of the Neo Geo family. It debuted in Japan in late 1998 but never saw a western release, being exclusive to Japan and smaller Asian markets such as Hong Kong.
The video game companies, all of em, are and have always been a shitshow. You should consider good games we got, as miracles.
Considering the how well the gameboy sold:

Units sold Worldwide: 118.69 million[6] (including Game Boy (Play it Loud!), Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light and Color units)

...and Nintendo s market dominance, they were going to give the NES to Atari to sell for them in the west. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q5_RgSCjBo

Consider this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv6UaHZxUys&t=

I m looking forward the furutre when stories about the Yakuza fucking up Nintendo, Sega, and everything coming from Japan to here.

GBA came out not too long after and was way better, with sampled audio playback (in software, but it was powerful enough to do it) and hardware scaling.
Also, the WSC was for the JP market only.
Did okay for what it was, but that's it.

SNK was busy fucking dying completely. They also weren't sold in enough places.
Also, the hardware was really weak -- loads better than the GBC (that's not hard), but the GBA out did it in damn near every way. Didn't have any real chance of surviving past 2002.
