We dont know, but there is no way to prove it. The world works just fine assuming we are not brains in jar, so why should we honestly care? You still have a family and friends, and need to eat, to sleep, you still have entertainment, hobbies and so on, so why assume it is all fake when coordinating your life in a way that assumes nothing is real will ultimately ruin it? Flesh is durable, self-healing and cheap. With enough funding and talent put into it you could probably make the first step in 5 years, and then create the final result in another 5 years. We know how to receive signals from neurons, not sure if we know how to give signals to neurons. It would require us to pretty much cure blindness as deafness first before we could even try to make something like this, but after that it does not seem like something that out of reality

Imagine if you will... miles upon miles of brains connected to limitless virtual worlds that adapt to the pleasure of their tiniest neuronal whim. While in this frame of reference occupy containers no bigger than a shoebox, taking at most a small fraction of the energy they do now. Show me a feasible way energetically to provide a godlike, limitless existence to trillions of people?
