Oh god damnit. My computer just died. Like hardcore died. I think my motherboard is toast. Dandy.

Well, time to buy a new laptop. Anyone have any suggestions for something awesome in the ~2000 USD price range? Needs dual boot win7 and able to go into Linux. Needs non-shitty graphics chipset. Needs quad core, 4~ gig ram, and decent speakers too. Microphone in and speakers out are required. svideo out would be nice too, though apparently most new TVs are using HDMI or some nonsense.

I'd be better off asking in /g/, wouldn't I? lol.

Fuck man, even the bullshit overpriced iphones are less than that.

Decent PC will cost you $700.

HDMI out is the only thing your laptop needs, as everything thats worth having uses it, or displayport, and an adapter that has no loss in quality costs about a dollar.

So, I do want a dual boot. I'm even wondering if I care enough to get win7. I probably do. Even though I don't use it to game anymore, there's still a couple pieces of software that I'd want to use.

Hell - it's time to do research on which linux / unix distro I want too. That can wait though.

Which win7 do I want? What are the differences between home and the various delux flavors?

Orly? So nvidia the way to go if I want it to work in some -unix distro? Thanks. I'm going to consult with my brother and friends tomorrow, who are a lot more knowledgeable.

I know I'm being silly getting a laptop over a desktop in some regards, but it's just too useful. Having it over at a friend's house, or at work, watching porn in bed, doing work on the table, etc., etc.

Throw on the ridiculous 4 core 4 gb+ ram because I can afford it and damnit it's irritating waiting for compiles to finish and lockups from misbehaving programs. Also, might be nice to get starcraft 2 running decently. (My brother bought it for me. Not sure I would have braved Blizzard's current anti-piracy practices myself.)

Usually when the laptop screen goes, it's just the inverter for the lights.

In some cases, you can test this by shining a bright light at the screen to try and see if the lcd still works.

>> No.3518870

In case it is the inverter, here's an example how to exchange it on an IBM laptop:

So I've read. I just shoved one of my fluorescent lamps at it, and I don't see anything. I don't know what a bad inverter would look like, but it doesn't seem like it's just missing the backlight.

To be fair, just before I turned it off last time, I was noticing visual artifacts on my screen. Just one - the cursor had an artifact that was following it around, and only when it was the "text cursor" as opposed to the standard mouse pointer. First time that happened. I didn't know what to make of it, first time anything like that happened, and I did my default reflex reaction is to do a reset to fix problems, so I did, and the monitor hasn't turned on since.

Just ripping what I can from what folders I have shared. If I could do a full hard drive rip, that would save me problems later probably, but I don't have it all shared. Let's see... I could take it in to work where I have a spare monitor with VGA hookup. Lols.

If there were artifacts, then it was more probably the vidya card. And if that's integrated, then the laptop's pretty much fucked. Always assuming you didn't have any remote control software installed on it?

You can get a usb adapter for hard drives for around $10, maybe 15 if it's got hook-ups for SATA and 2.5 and 3.5 PATA. Easiest way to get at all those juicy morsels of files.
