Well, the substance of my course was all to do with examining how language is applied for different purposes (persuasive, informative, etc, writing for different audiences, different styles, etc etc etc). Then we looked at the history and development of the English language (early, middle, modern English, and the future of the language), and how babies/young children learn how to speak/write English. The exams are good fun.

An almost completely useless course on its own unless if you want to become a linguist... although some companies/Universities consider it to be a good qualification because you learn how to apply the language for different purposes, hence you are considered to have acquired good writing skills. I managed to impress my University when I applied to study Law.

I volunteered and took on a poor client for an uncontested divorce. Right before we were going to appear in court (literally 15 minutes before) she calls me up crying and says she's being evicted right that minute.

Now, I knew that a landlord cannot legally evict someone in my state like that; they have to go through a 30-60 day process of eviction, so he can't legally spring it on my client the day he's throwing her shit onto the street.

But since we signed a retainer agreement limiting my representation to the divorce, and if I helped her I could seriously be exposing myself to liability as well, I didn't help her. Felt batman and johngoodman at the same time.

It really shouldn't be that way, there's just some weird culture of superiority that has invaded physics. Of course, most of the physics students who like to get all high and mighty about shit are the mediocre ones. The exceptional ones generally don't look down on other physical sciences. I also firmly believe that the exceptional chemistry undergrads in my department are a good deal smarter than the average physics undergrad. The same is of course true of the exceptional physics and biology undergrads and the average chemistry students.

tl;dr: The best students in most sciences are smarter than the average ones in any other, and only the average ones try to validate themselves by saying their field proves they're smart.
