Also, OP, you must be forgetting that Enlightenment scientists started most of their observations because they believed God granted them the mental capacities to do so....therefore, the vast body of science would not exist if it wasn't for the belief in a deity.
AND, even if God doesn't exist, it's comforting to have something to believe in.
