Why do all these designs feel the need to put panels on the side? Is it to make them look more car like? Are they afraid of being mad fun of if it looks too much like the Apolo one? I get if they want to put a roof on to protect from roll over, not that they would ever take a risk driving that could flip it. But the panels on the side just get in the way and add mass.

Starship may mean we don't need to mass autism everything but I would much rather they make it more functional rather than futuristic or whatever. If we are going that far get some auto maker to design the styling to subsidize the cost. I could see a moon porche or something corvette inspired to pay homage to the astronauts cars.

To be honest if you're talking satellite time they're already so detailed they take the time dilation this new time zone is for into account.

I doubt they're going to give geosynchronous orbit its own time zone, but that's what this opens the door to. This isn't Moon time exactly since the day is 708 hours long and pretty useless for us 25-hour diurnal mammals, but it should make record keeping easier for systems that would otherwise constantly be adding an offset to UTC.

Moon time will only become important when there are people on the surface who care how close it is to lunar night, which means an entire day may be hundreds of hours long

The for-profit start-ups have to convince investors that they have a good business plan and aren't likely to just waste the investors' money on chasing dead-end technologies. Because the companies have very limited amounts of money, it also means that a project failure could end the company. So obviously the start-ups are reticent to try risky unproven technologies when there is a safe proven option. The big Chinese aerospace SOEs, CASC and CASIC, are trying various other things.

How much do Malaysia or the Marshall Islands even regulate space, especially back in 2006?

Cross-border operations work, until the various countries involved start introducing regulations that are different. And many European countries are quite prone to regulate things, especially after there's been a controversy due to someone messing something up.

It can still work even if regulations are different, although it means that the regulatory burden increases the more countries are involved in the value chain.

The main rationale for EU-level regulation is to reduce the regulatory burden of cross-border value chains. Sure it might not always produce the optimal outcome, and sometimes the process is exploited for shady purposes such as geographical brand protection of French cheeses or whatever, however you can see the point of having EU-wide regulations.

I assumed what I was replying to was meant as criticism of EU-wide regulation as a concept, rather than criticism of European politicians' and voters' penchant for regulation.

It might be true that Europeans are too regulation-prone, but would it be better if the regulation-prone politicians in 18 out of 27 member states - including the biggest economies - created 18 different regulations at the national level? No, it's better if the whole union agrees to common regulations, so that there won't be regulatory differences that create additional regulatory burdens on cross-border value chains. And that was my point. I didn't intend to make any point on whether the act of regulating space itself is good or bad in this case.

>a massive bureucracy
The EU commission has about 32k employees, and all EU institutions employ about 60k people. Compare with the US federal government, which employs about 1.9m civilians even though the US has a smaller population than the EU. The actual implementation of EU decisions are done by the member states' own bureaucracies.

Still, it is true that EU institutions are bloated. This is deliberate, to justify keeping as many bigwigs and mediumwigs from member countries on the EU payroll as possible, to make it politically very hard to break up the EU because it would mean a lot of politically influential people would lose their cushy highly salaried jobs. The common agricultural policy subsidies exist for the same reason, to make it politically harder to break up the EU. Counter-intuitively, it actually saves money, because it creates the political certainty that businesses need to dare to make major investments across borders.

>> No.16111872

makes sense, but EU does like to regulate before its even clear there is any need for it or if the implementation makes any sense (lets say the tech is advancing rapidly like AI)

>> No.16111876

>>16111872
It might actually be the optimal point to create regulations, because laying down the regulatory standard at an early point provides certainty and reduces risk for the businesses that are investing in the sector. It depends on what the actual regulations are.

Also, an EU-wide regulatory standard can serve to limit the opportunities for national politicians to create more stringent regulations on the national level.

As I understand it, member countries can impose additional regulations, however they can't create regulations on the exact same thing that contradict EU regulations, depending on how the EU regulation is formulated. For example, suppose a member country were to create a satellite cybersecurity certification process that is different and much more onerous to pass.

I think, most importantly, the existence of an EU standard removes the impetus for, and makes it harder to justify, national level politicians creating national regulations on something for which EU regulations already exist, even when they technically can find the legal room to do so.

The text of the law isn't available yet apparently, although as it is described:

>“We need to build a true EU single market for space and this is, of course, the purpose of the upcoming EU space law,” said Thierry Breton, commissioner for the internal market, in a keynote address at the conference.

>The law, he said, would help harmonize the current “very diverse space regime” within the EU, where 11 member states have their own national laws for space. “This fragmented approach prevents us from acting as a bloc,” he said. “Therefore, the EU space law will set common rules related to space activities.”

>Members of the European Parliament, which will take up the legislative proposal once it is released, supported the broad themes that commission officials have outlined for the law. “All of this has been floating around the European Parliament for much longer,” said Niklas Nienass, a member of the parliament. That includes, he said, “clear support for the single market, the ability for companies throughout Europe to easily work together on space matters.”

>One concern expressed by European industry is how the law will be applied. “We need to be careful first to have something that is harmonized across Europe,” said Hervé Derrey, president and chief executive of Thales Alenia Space, on another conference panel, “but also to make sure we are on the playing field with the rest of the world.”

>He and others argued that the law needs to apply not just to European companies but to foreign companies seeking to operate in the EU. Kavvada reassured them that is the goal of the proposed law. “The intent is to create a competitive advantage of the European industrial ecosystem and, therefore, apply to each and every company from a third country who would like to do business in Europe,” she said. “So, the same rules for the Europeans and for the non-Europeans.”

Potential of the Russian space industry has been presented by Glavkosmos, part of Russia's state space agency Roscosmos, in Angola

The head of Glavkosmos told the participants of the NewsSpace conference, taking place in Angola's capital, Luanda, about the opportunities for African countries arising from the development of cooperation with Russia in the field of space exploration.

"The solutions proposed by Glavkosmos based on the results of space activities will not only reduce poverty but also improve the quality of life of the population of African countries," Ilya Tarasenko said.

According to him, "satellite technologies promoted by the company can increase agricultural productivity, improve public access to health care, the quality of education and vocational training, and enhance control over the use of natural resources, and facilitate access to financial services."

Space technologies in Africa "will have an impact on improving human security and the effectiveness of government activities; it will become more timely to provide assistance in natural disasters and emergencies, and satellite monitoring will help track infrastructure development and government spending to prevent corruption," Tarasenko stressed.

I am unsure if those certs will help you all that much. I am in engineering and I was just talking with a recruiter trying to get me to go to Alabama. If you want to work in the NASA framework, most of the actual work is done by contractors. Each Nasa facility has a company or even a few that hires the techs that actually do most of the hands on work.

Try finding a Nasa site doing work that interests you, (flight testing, vacuum chamber, engine test) then see who the contractors are for that site and apply with them. I hope that helps.

Otherwise look for all the newspace places.

I guess I'm just lamenting my current career trajectory. My goal has always been to work on spacecraft, and that hasn't changed, but with a wife and kids on the way living outside of anywhere important to the industry I'm beginning to lose momentum. Someone needs to assemble, maintain and repair these machines, and I figured the path would be more direct than going back to college in my late twenties and hoping to win the internship lottery. I'm confident that the orbital industry is poised for a boom, and that my skillset will be more in-demand in the near future. I'm just concerned with how best to set myself up for the right opportunities. Stupid. AI is happening regardless. Humanoid robots are happening regardless.
All machines for human spaceflight will be computer controllable regardless for remote operation.
Therefore you're wrong, space companies and agencies shouldn't focus on that.

well welcome newscum (you should get used to that people will know). if you actually have any interest in spaceflight then happy to have you aboard. warning though that we are the most autistic general on this board and have constant infighting but also unique kulcha compared to the rest of /sci/. still if you want actual activity and not just vaxx thread #5498382 and B*rkun or other assorted namefag copy paste threads then this is your place.

please just dont make OPs until youre atleast like a year deep in to this general at minimum because thats how the racebait thread happened. you can ask questions and people will have answers, theres actually allot going on on a daily basis in spaceflight and we are here literally watching them fill up tanks and transport massive roggets every day.

So, when can we expect the next höp? They should get the permit relatively easy this time around, no?
