Reddit has a sub about it but I never see it discussed here. Thoughts?

I believe the exact opposite will happen.

I'll always feel a little silly for taking it somewhat seriously, but that is a hazard in believing something you don't yet understand.

We're gonna run out of oil at some point.
also climate change and no real progress in computing recently.
neural networks are powerful and interesting but what we have is not rational nor intelligent, let alone conscious.
we're simply ngmi

It was always going to happen eventually and his predictions are seeming more and more likely lately.

It will happen. What will happen to us depends on how much our current elite resist it.

that only means I can ask daddy AI to gibs whatever I want. at most I'd have some waiting to do, depending on what I ask for.

What do you mean? By Ellul's terms in "The Technological Society"?.
Yes I would be inclined to believe that.
Or by the coming of The Messianic AI?
Bullshit and the current boogeyman.

https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/ted-kaczynski-the-techies-wet-dreams

> In view of everything we've said up to this point, and in view moreover of the fact that the techies' vision of the future is based on pure speculation and is unsupported by evidence,[26] one has to ask how they can believe in that vision. Some techies, e.g. , Kurzweil, do concede a slight degree of uncertainty as to whether their expectations for the future will be realized,[27] but this seems to be no more than a sop that they throw to the skeptics, something they have to concede in order to avoid making themselves too obviously ridiculous in the eyes of rational people. Despite their pro forma admission of uncertainty, it's clear that most techies confidently expect to live for many centuries, if not forever, in a world that will be in some vaguely defined sense a utopia.[28] Thus Kurzweil states flatly: "We will be able to live as long as we want... ."[29] He adds no qualifiers—no "probably," no "if things turn out as expected." His whole book reveals a man intoxicated with a vision of the future in which, as an immortal machine, he will participate in the conquest of the universe. In fact, Kurzweil and other techies are living in a fantasy world.

the Singularity already happened 1,993 years ago when Jesus Christ Resurrected from the Dead.

Why haven't we tried hooking our best AI up to some kind of recursively self improving programming box that runs a humanoid robot?
Start with small tasks like "Move right arm", "Move Left arm", and just iterate from there until the thing can walk around.
With embodiment and specific goal direction we could get AI a good PHYSICAL foundation for exploring the world and developing into AGI.
After we get AGI then we have it solved all the big problems and get us to the post-scarcity life we need.
