Some extreme forms of censorship even force people to say things they know it or think it to be untrue, that is extremely demoralising and effective

Its the opposite. The purpose isn't to change the person who is being censored, but to change the people who would have heard the censored content otherwise.
You can't convince reasonable adults to be religious, but if you censor them you can make their kids dumb enough to believe in nearly anything. Some of those kids will still believe it into adulthood if they aren't that smart.
