They used iron weapons, had cavalry and used cannons. I've never heard of Africans using trebuchets though. If you removed guns that they received during trades, I'd say that west African forest kingdoms were equal to the Gauls in terms of tech. Benin, Dahomey and the Kongo were not medieval. Malians, Somalis, Chadians, the people of Sudan and Ethiopia were definitely medieval though.
