I don't get it, /sci/. Do any of you actually like your field of study, or are you just bullshitting your way through school in hope that you find a good job later on to pay off your debt?

I see so many students that are all "oh um, yeah, my mom's making me do this" or "oh, oh, nursing major hurp."

math major here (for argument's sake: I like deep anal penetration, too)

Physics major here
I like it sometimes
but most of the time its too much busywork

And it's the major with the least besides hurr durr majors.

I dunno, there are only four math majors among roughly 15,000 students in the south US. I hate this place.

Are you an engineer as well?

EE major from old money here. Shits just fun.

I've still never heard the gay engineer joke outside /sci/. In fact I can't say I've met a single openly gay engineer out of hundreds.

I dunno, enjoy mine, but I figure it would be more enjoyable to buy and read a few books on the subject than endure years of stress.

Biochemistryfag here. I like my major. I may not like everything, such as physical chemistry, but overall I think its exciting.

Never been "good" at math, and far from being naturally talented at it.

But for fuck's sake, if I am going to pay for an education and just choose the easy path to a degree (in an area where I am strong, such as writing, literature etc...), then I don't see the point in such a waste of time and money.

Therefore, I chose to put myself out of my comfort zone and go for a heavily scientific major. Still undecided as to exactly which one, but I'll be honest with you : I am looking forward to the challenge.

Bio here, I enjoy every second of it, and fully plan to suffer and be poor because of it.

never do something for money or "hope that you find a good job later"

>> No.2423246

i do physics and math because i fucking love it.

i do bio and chem as my electives in case i decide i want to take the MCAT (both my parents and grandparents are all doctors). Surgery here i might come!

By the way, does anyone know if foreign nationals can work at NASA? I'm Australian, and my shitty country doesn't even have a space agency

>> No.2423250

I've been double majoring math and physics for 2 years, and planned on being a professor and doing research in the field since 9th grade. But I just took 6 months off of school because I'm realizing I'm wasting my life. I don't actually want to teach, it was the research I was interested in, but who am I kidding? I'm way better at math/science than like 98% of people, but that's still not good enough to really make a difference. I'll never have a nobel prize. I'm not going to find the unifying field theory for physics. And even if I'm just a decent professor, I'll make like 70k. So I'm changing my major to Actuarial science, and I'm going to make good money at a boring but easy ass job, come home, leave the work at home, and party with all my money. Fuck intellectual curiosity.

tl;dr failed math/physics student crying over fail.

Wrong. I went to a Community College (free tuition due to family member working as a teacher there) to fulfill most of the shitty GER classes and obtain an Associate's Degree in the process. Had the occasion to take a lot of electives, most of which were Bio/Phy/Chem & Math.

Transferred to 4-year college and looking to challenge myself these next 2 years for my Bachelor's degree.

I'm going to be in your position exactly in 2 years. YOU'RE KILLING MY DREAMS

DONT FUCKING GIVE UP.

that just /sci/'s joke. i think the overall feeling is that among scientists, engineers tend to be the least "scientific." youll find a high concentration of creationists, conservatives, and GW deniers in engineering fields. The gay joke is just like an expression of a dislike for engineers because of the previously stated problems.

Wouldn't being an Actuary be extremely easy? Don't they basically just plug numbers into a program, and it does most of the work? I've never understood why they get paid so much, when I can't imagine them doing much actual work.

>> No.2424045

>>2423250

mate, i'm in the same boat. better than maths/phys than most people but definitely not good enough to do anything worthwhile. the thing that keeps me going though is that working as a prof will be 10x better than working as an engineer or actuary, aside from the money.

>> No.2424739

>>2423287
Friend of mine is an actuary. I tease him about it all the time, because he transfered out of computer engineering. Fact of the matter is it's not actually that easy of a field.
