At the moment, the concept is mostly if not entirely unscientific. If Causal Closure is true, then it becomes almost certainly unscientific. Papers argue that Causal Closure is in of itself unscientific, however, so.
In the field of medical science there are a small handful of weird papers arguing for seemingly impossible veridical perceptions in strange incidents. Generally the subjective is unfalsifiable and unscientific, but at the same time it is said the plural of anecdote is data.
Ultimately, the idea of a hereafter, if any, is primarily the domain of philosophy of mind and religion, and remains to be seen empirically until our own brains stop.
