Or you can just fucking use a Starship HLS lol
HLS Delta V is on the ballpark of 8.5-9 km/s, all inclusive of radiation shielding, life support.

Free Return TLI is ~3.3 km/s, you can do one then just decelerate the 3.3 km/s back to LEO, one dragon or two bring the crew to the HLS and back.

Same. I think they should've gotten some sort of visual artist (as messy as it would probably get in space), but this is fine. The worst of them in terms of celeb status are Aoki and the b-list kpop idol, and I expected worse.
I question the backup crew snowboarder though. Sure you can do tricks and shit on snowboards, but I wouldn't really consider it "art", and certainly not art that can be demonstrated in or enhanced by space.

Went down a rabbit hole. Started with the RD-0410. Higher performance in terms of exhaust temp and isp compared to NERVA. According to the wikipedia article, the 0410 is now seeing an evolved design in pockocmoc’s TEM nuclear tug. Which makes no sense to me because TEM is nuclear electric? There were some ideas of a reusable Liquid-Propellant booster for Ariane 5, but they were all far in the future.

There was the DARPA FALCON Small Launch Vehicle program, SpaceX actually participated in it, there were some reusable or air launched (including spaceshipone-launched) proposals.

I was 90% sure Europa Clipper was flying on a direct trajectory on SLS, I guess I hallucinated it. Falcon Heavy really isn't suited for this sort of thing, somewhat annoying. It's possible the SRBs would simply destroy the orbiter though, they really limit what can actually be flown on SLS.

>>15042824
The contract isn't for a full rocket.

>>15042826
Heavy makes the mission only ~30% cheaper and SLS would cut the transit time in half. Sure, if you only look at the launch vehicle cost the difference in price is absurd, but these sorts of tradeoffs are something I'd be willing to make.

>>15042828
Annoying, that's pretty much the last reason for SLS to exist. Whatever, I give up, at least we'll have real heavy lift capability soon. The only reason SLS needs so much thrust is because Orion is fat as fuck, just split it out into three Dragon launches, and save 40 billion.

Yeah. I’m not sure how Starship stacks up against a Block 2, especially for anything past the asteroid belt. I’m sure it’s pretty similar (maybe even better?) But it’s certainly better than FH, packing a lot of power but going with the measly kerolox upper stage. Lucky for me europa is less interesting than Titan and Venus so I’m not too bummed about the switch. Plus SLS is so fucking expensive i’m glad Clipper isn’t riding on it

One day FH will be retired after Falcon is finally laid to rest, and that will leave only Starship as a heavier lifter as SLS will be overbooked for Artemis. Just a trade study, a "what-if" versus any actual plan. They note that there is no single customer or existing plans for space that could possibly need payload sizes that exceed even Falcon Heavy's capabilities

Just keep in the back of your mind that NASA tries to encourage companies to reuse vehicle designs they built and flew for somebody else (or developed on their own initiative) via "on-ramp" provisions. If the next-gen space station wants to go heavy, or somebody goes crazy for single-launch constellations, they'll fund this monster and NASA will suddenly find itself with more launch capability than they know what to do with, which is a good problem to have

It won't be sustainable because Vulcan will never be fully reusable, but it might be doable

If it was between Falcon Heavy and Starship, and Starship somehow cost two billion, there would still be an argument to be made to fly a direct mission on Starship to save years on transit and make the mission vastly more capable.

https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2022/12/boeing-expanding-cs-prod/
>Boeing, the prime contractor for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage, is adding two new work locations at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida as the company looks to support increases in the production rate of the launch vehicle. The completed engine section structure for the third Core Stage is being transported by barge from NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans to KSC, where Boeing will now outfit the most complicated element of the SLS inside the Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF).

>After the rest of the third Core Stage unit is completed at Michoud, it will also be barged to KSC, where final assembly will be moving into High Bay 2 of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at KSC. The large volume of the VAB High Bay will allow Boeing to store completed Core Stages without interfering with continuing production, which frees up more space at Michoud to expand operations there for production of the new Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) for the next generation of the SLS vehicle.

Article says Boeing thinks they can do 2+ per year with the new facilities

Of course, for Dearmoon specifically, a single ground station could be enough -- you get good communication 8+ hours a day, so plan your mission so all key events happen in those hours, and at post pay DSN or IM for occasional, brief check-ins the rest of the day. But that's not happening, it's the kind of cornercutting you might do if you had no larger goal than flying celebrities around the moon.

If your goal were specifically supporting private lunar expeditions, there's specific solutions like halo orbits with advantages w/r/t eclipsing and so on.

But if you're trying to implement a general-purpose point-anywhere capability like DSN, a single large relay in GEO and a single ground station would be a good start, getting you coverage in any direction for 23 hours a day (or 24 hours, off-ecliptic). Later you can add a second bird even a few degrees away to cover the gap, and you can still work both relays from the same ground station.
Starship's payload volume should easily handle a 34m-class inflatable/folding/etc. dish; that's overkill for the moon, but a good start if you want more general capability (for deep space probes etc.), or if you view it as a prototype for Earth/Mars relays.

Still probably more expensive than just buying/leasing land in various places around the world and building a literal mini-DSN, but Musk is eventually going to need the big-dish-in-orbit tech for high throughput Earth/Mars relays, so I could see SpaceX going this way.

The Buran-cousin is completely automated and its internal volume is filled up with propellant tankage. It'd fly back back to the spaceport using the same autopilot used on Buran's test flight. The mini-shuttle carries the crew and cargo and is roughly equivalent to the air-launched MAKS design. Both spaceplanes use tripropellant engines, probably the RD-701; there's two of them on the booster and one of the mini. I'm not sure exactly how the RG-1/LOX/LH2 are divided out, but both planes were intended to operate using both engine modes.

Then you have to account for how much their boutique hardened satellite bus design process will cost. At the end of the day if you can find $500k you can find $1.1M and just go up on Falcon 9 rideshare. Then eventually Neutron will come along and eat constellation deployment forever

SeX are really the only ones who have figured out how to do cheap tanks, cheap materials, and (most importantly) cheap engines. The costs just add up because everyone else outsourced most of the production. The engine companies can only do it for multiple millions per engine. The material science people want to isogrid large pieces of metal, driving costs up. Blah blah blah next thing you know your dinky little project now costs $750 million when it would otherwise cost spacex $20 million for the equivalent project or whatever

It could have some uses as a diet version of an orbital kinetic bombardment system. You spin up a few launchers in Guam or the Hawaiian islands and then five minutes later it's raining iron on some poor brown people in the middle east. A ICBM doesn't need to get all the way to orbit so the need for an upper stage are nixed, which gets rid of at least some of the unproven technical issues.

SUSIE isn't from ESA. It's just an Arianegroup internal concept.

ESA is planning a cargo lander called HERACLES to support Artemis from 2030 onwards. It features a reusable ascent stage, which will be used to bring back cargo and lunar soil samples from the lunar surface to the Gateway. It could easily be turned into a 2 person crewed lander, although that's not currently planned. There is very little chance that ESA bids it to NASA because NASA doesn't want ESA to do anything more than the ESM and stay a "minor" partner. In 2020 ESA awarded Airbus to design an ESM-derived ressuply vehicle for Gateway and JAXA was studying H-3/HTV-X derivatives for Gateway, but NASA selected SpaceX for Gateway ressuply and both proposal went nowhere. Similar reasons that got Roscosmos quitting Gateway last year, after getting their Multi Purpose Module proposal refused by NASA. ESA proposed Vinci for EUS, NASA also refused.
NASA wants to keep Artemis as American as possible and is being quite a bitch with international partners.

ULA paid $10 mil per RD-180 (with strings attached) and BO said they wanted to sell for “half that amount” but I think the contract is still $10 per engine. This would put one AR1 at $10-12.5 mil right?

He's a hipster billionaire, probably suffering some mid/late life crisis, and wants to throw some ridiculous party around the Moon. I don't care about his reasons, as long as he's paying for Starship. Personally, I'm extremely blackpilled about "artists", because I know a lot of musicians, some actors and writers irl. They are all vapid, egocentric and arrogant. Which isn't a surprise, since art represents the state of society, but that is discussion for other boards. At least in the video for the ugly woman, she said she takes analog photos, so that's hopefully going to give us some cool shots. Also, I expect Tim to give inside info about Starship ahead of launch.

Vapid is fair enough, but if you're not egocentric and arrogant you aren't going to choose a career that is all but guaranteed to leave you broke and homeless. People without a confident belief that they are inherently the exception to the rule go into jobs ranging from producing something useful down to waiting tables, or even HR, and put whatever expressive talents they have (or think they do) into hobbies.
That's a sampling bias independent of current society.
