It would make the most sense,. It would be incredibly unlikely for 2 Russian Cruise missiles to fail at the same time, in the same way, veer off the in the same direction and land not too far away from each other. But it makes perfect sense for 2 AD missiles fired at the same target to miss their mark and land close to each other down range. Also missiles the Russians were firing this morning are cruise missiles with half ton warheads, the missiles that crashed in Poland are surface to air missiles with warheads of only 100kg.

Am I the only one that thinks inflatable heat shields are going to be way better than tiles for upper stage reuse in the long term? If you make them non-circular and place them on the side of a stage instead of the bottom of a capsule, you can cover everything from the crew compartment back to the engine bell. If you make the heat shield and tanks a self contained module that can be quickswapped between flights, you also decouple your TPS repair timeline from your upper stage reuse timeline, something Starship does NOT improve over the Shuttle on.

compare this to the first two attempts though, where the launch team had to basically take the thing into a chokehold and slam its head against a wall to get it to KIND of work
even the new tanking test where they drafted the new procedures was more drastic than this. I guess they refined them further using the data they got from that?

>> No.14986913

>>14986909
Well, the first attempt they'd never made it through a WDR even, it's not too surprising there were issues. Hydrogen is hard, but still, it's certainly absurd for it to be surprising that it works without issue. Even shitshows like Astra tank without issue, Starship / Superheavy haven't had tanking issues, the Shuttle (rarely) had severe tanking issues, it's just genuinely not that hard.

The shuttle averaged 1.9 scrubs per launch, with the individual figures ranging from 0-6. If this doesn't go it'll be the third mechanical scrub, or the fourth if you include the roll-back due to Ian. We haven't even gotten to the first launch yet.

>> No.14987622

>>14987617
Here's how they fixed it on Apollo 11:
>"They tightened all the bolts and they cleared the pad and we brought flow up again," Coester said. "And immediately it leaked just as bad as before. So we said, 'We ain't going to the moon."'

>Teams try again a few more times with no success. It's not until someone from the crew decides to warm the valve to stop the leak.

>"One of them said, 'well it didn't leak when it was warm before we starting flowing through it and so maybe we can make it not leak by warming it up,"' Coester said.

>There was only one problem: Warming the valve would also disable it since it wouldn't be able to maintain the nearly freezing liquid hydrogen at that same temperature.

>That's when Coester decides there are only two options left: Either scrub another day or use the main valve to fill the rest of the rocket's third stage. But again, there was a problem with this approach.

>The main valve flowed at either 3,000 or 500 gallons per minute, a problem since the replenish flow rate only had to be about 80 to 100 gallons per minute, according to Coester. That led teams to bypass the automated loading computer and instead manually control the high flow valve.

>"OK, what we're going to do is I'm going to monitor the level in the tank and when it drops down to 99%, we're going to open that valve at 500 gallons per minute and when it gets to 100%, we're going to close it," Coester remembers telling the rest of the engineers.

>During the last hour and a half before liftoff, Coester and fellow engineer Jack Kramer, went back and forth filling the rocket with liquid hydrogen.

>"For about every 15 to 20 seconds for the last hour and a half, Jack and I coordinated and opened the valve and closed the valve and maintained 100% of the tank," Coester said.

>It wasn't until T-minus three minutes and six seconds until launch that flow was terminated and the tank was pressurized for flight.

No. I think the most optimistic timeline possible, even with Apollo tier investment, is something like:
>2025: Artemis 3
>2028: Moon base + gateway up and running with permanent presence on Moon
>2030: testing of long term medical effects of low gravity, surface construction/ISRU/evas/etc. complete
>2032: unmanned tests and transfer of infrastructure needed for manned mission to Mars
>2034: manned mission to Mars
But in all probability, if you double the time for each of these you'll still be disappointed.

Not that any president gives a fuck about space. Space politics are about keeping high paying jobs in senator’s districts not about left right or about advancing the technology. There really isn’t a lot of enthusiasm around space exploration, not even when Apollo was flying.

I'm trying all the streams:
https://endpnt.com/hls/nasa-media/playlist.m3u8 works fine on Android, only 720p.
https://endpnt.com/hls/nasa4k/playlist.m3u8
2176p drops frames but looks smooth in MPV (framedrop becomes reduced fps)
Unless NASA source is low FPS?
https://endpnt.com/hls/nasa4k60/playlist.m3u8 buffers too often despite only 5 Mbps
http://endpnt.com:8000/nasa-media.ts works fine but is only 720p
http://endpnt.com:8000/nasa-uhd.ts is 2160p, uses 14 Mbps but MPV plays with reduced FPS

I still don't understand the SLS moon landing mission architecture. The rocket's TLI capacity is barely superior to that of N1, are they going to launch the lander on a separate rocket? Are they going to mimic Apollo once EUS comes around? Please don't tell me they're going to use Starship for landing, cause what the fuck is the point then? A direct ascent superheavy vehicle necessiating a separate superheavy rocket for crew transfer is just upsetting, I understand they don't want to keep the crew waiting during the LEO refuels, but why transfer crew in LLO using SLS when the same can be accomplished in LEO using a Dragon? This is just wrong and retarded on so many levels I swear to god.

the current plan is to fly the Starship to Earth orbit, refuel it there, send it to an orbit around the moon, Launch SLS with Orion and the crew to dock with SS around the moon, SS lands, then takes off, then the crew transfers again to Orion in moon orbit, and then Orion takes them home. It's an open question if SS has enough dV to go from Earth orbit to landing on the moon to Earth orbit. The current architecture includes discarding SS after the crew leaves it. Also SLS is the only rocket powerful enough than can launch the heavy Orion to the Moon. So we are stuck with this architecture.
