I’m not sure when it was increasing in the first place. The dropout rates for STEM are high enough as it is.

How do you deal with not being sure if you will be able to get into your desired field of studies ?

I'm currently studying mathematics (2nd year) and I want to get into financial engineering (because I love probabilities/statistics and programming), which, from what i understand, is a very selective field, the thing is, as soon as I find an obstacle, I immediately give up and enter a vicious circle of low self-esteem, telling myself I will never be what I want to become and being overall very fatalist about my project. For example during a recent lecture I didn't quite understand a notion in topology and I didn't even try to re-read the lesson because of all this.

Do people who managed to get in "prestigious" universities and formations have always understood things very quickly, and didn't need to spend a whole lot of time studying, or did they also struggle and worked hard on notions they didn't understand at first ?
