What is the proof behind a - (-b) = a+b?

It's something I know and have always been told and I accept (I'm not saying it's wrong!) but I've never been told WHY. I like reasoning behind things. Also, saying "the minus's cancel out" isn't really proof, is it? What's the logic behind it?

Thanks /sci/.
Also, a cat.

Right, first of all sorry to those who hate biology but I have a question.

I was speaking to a friends brother who takes Biology at Edinburgh University (Yeah I'm a 'Britfag') and we got onto the topic of pets and then obviously cats.

He then told me that the reason why cats bones are so good (can't think of the correct word) and why cats are so agile is because when they purr the vibrations created by this purring is good for the bones so therefore they become strengthened?

I know its a terrible explanation but hopefully someone can decipher what I'm trying to say.

Is this true?
Pic semi-related: a cat.

Hey /sci/

Why is it (or why is it perceived) that animals become sick much less often than humans? (Inb4 humans are animals - I know. I mean most domesticated ,common animals like cats and dogs.)

In the case that they do - how are the symptoms, how often do they occur, and what are they when animals are sick? Do they resemble sickness in humans whatsoever?

Note: I am not talking about sickness as in disease, but things we would recognize as the flu or common cold.

What's up with math texts not including solutions to at least half of the problems? Hell... some include only solutions to like a few(the easy ones)...

Why would I do a problem if I'll never know it's right?

Hoping someone knows the name of this experiment, if it exists.

Basically, I heard someone's anecdotal account of an experiment which seemed to show that stress causes death. Cat A is given poison, and a sedative, while Cat B is just given poison (in the same dosage.) Cat A survives.

Anyone heard of this?
