The truth of this all, that I remain reluctant to acknowledge to myself, is that EK's stench of stupidity is so glaringly egregious that the damage is already done.

Not even close. Tundra and taiga comprise almost 20% of the earth's land area, warming would be a massive boon to biodiversity.
