23157984 No.23157984 [Reply] [Original]

As much as Lord of the Rings is considered the trope maker for the fantasy genre, the characters and story of Frodo, Sam and Gollum are entirely unique in it and there really aren't any other characters or story arcs like them

I'm not well read enough to claim otherwise, but I'm quite certain that this isn't the case.

>Bongo met his friend Pippin and they shared some pipeweed together
>Pippin, son of Poppin, was the owner of Toppin's Tavern in the land of Droppin during the 912th year of the The Third Era. A siege led by Khrazug M'kholack and the orc army forced the Poppins to relocate to the land of Floppin, where they were met with heavy resistence from the local dwarven clan of Gerlim-Kleim.

Can't say for the two hobbits, but Gollum is very similar to Alberich from Wagner's Ring Cycle. A work that Tolkien clearly took some inspiration from.

Frodo's story is one of the hero being corrupted and defeated by evil but ultimately saved by grace and the strength of Sam. It is a story about perseverance in the face of evil more than any man could be expected to do, but a story about how no man can stand against evil alone.
Honestly all that's coming to mind offhand is Spencer's red cross knight who is explicitly granted victory by grace: despite being the only man bold enough to attempt the task, it cannot be done without god.

Frodo sets off to give the ring to someone else. It is only at rivendell that he decides to take on the responsibility for what he ultimately knows is probably a slim hope of success. The plan was originally to hand it off to the elves and go back to the shire. Frodo's story is about accepting a responsibility that is by no means yours to bare.

Frodo reminds me of Luke Skywalker but actually in a lesser fashion. They are heroes who actually lose at the climax. Frodo in the books is only "redeemed" involuntarily by Gollum biting off his finger and falling into the fires of Mount Doom whereas Luke realizes his fall to the dark side and redeems himself by laying down his lightsaber. Yes, I will see myself out for invoking Star Wars.
