I found a note on my phone from when I was drinking and workshopping short story collection titles, and realized I have a pretty solid set of autobiographical stories in the tone of Sergei Dovlatov.

I'm starting it tomorrow.

lol my great grandfather rolled his own cigarettes but didn’t use filters. I think that’s why he eventually had his legs amputated. He was also an Italian immigrant who did tiling work and never became naturalized because his “study sessions” with fellow immigrants were just wine sessions. Sometimes I forget about how much of a stereotype that guy was.

My new years resolution for 2023 was to read one French novel from start to finish
For most of the year it seemed like a pipe dream
Last month I decided to read a 20 page short story and I said 'well that's it, that's my new years resolution done' as a kind of lazy compromise since I didn't think I'd be able to do anything else
But then 3 weeks ago I started reading a novel just on a whim and last week I finished it and now I'm about 50 pages away from finishing another novel
So this year has been terrible but at least I've done this and can end the year with a sense of accomplishment which is more than I can say for most years of my life

I know that feel anon.
I wasted so many years of my life doing nothing. I didn't understand the value of my time or the consequences of my actions. I was always a late bloomer (my father even considered having a doctor kick-start my puberty because it was taking so long) so maybe this is just part of that. Maybe I was always going to take a while to become a functioning adult. That being said, I'm doing well by my old standards. The me of today is doing vastly better for himself than the one of a few months ago, of a year ago, of *shudder* 5 years ago. While I can't help but feel bad that my peers are already moving into their careers and I'm still working on my undergrad, I need to keep a positive growth mindset.

The only thing that matters is that the me of the present is doing better than the me of the recent past. I will assure that continues being the case by improving my habits little by little until I become the person I want to be.
