expecting someone to read between the lines before they've read the book is a bit unrealistic. when the title and description are all you know about a book, it's only rational to make incorrect, overly-general assumptions. the possibility of having your expectations subverted is the incentive that justifies reading the book in the first place.
i would hate to read the description of a book and then immediately be able to accurately infer its nuance from that alone.

I also thought it would involve a meticulous police procedural element. I was also in 10th grade and could only conceptualize dramatic detective narratives for the most. I got into this book because someone had a tattoo of the cat telling people how great the book was, and I made the logical conclusion:

it was so much more, and I was not expecting Pontius Pilate
I went into this blind, it doesn't help that the covers always portray the cat first
I was also 100% sure the Master in the title was referring to the devil and not the actual 'Master' who appears in a handful of chapters and whose role seems so minor
Magarita got more fleshed out than he did
also Woland, is a way outdated word for the devil-for some readers this reference might very well go over their heads

I hated it at first, dropped it after first chapter, but the memes lured me back. New Sun really isn't what you want it to be, but it's something much more. You can only appreciate it when you're finished. Speaking of which, I really need to make the Urth of the New Sun collage.
"You will not get it on your first read" is a terrible marketing trick you'll hear here. I got it the first time, but the more I think about the series, the less I feel confident about my knowledge.
