Hardy’s great at names. As soon as I saw the thread I thought of Return of the Native, whose principals include Clem Yeobright, Diggory Venn, and Eustacia Vye.

Yeah, I read Return of the Native in highschool and fell madly in love with Eustacia, pathetically. What a fate

Bathsheba Everdeen from Madding Crowd comes to mind

>> No.23279678

I think some people in this thread are confusing “favourite character names” with “favourite characters’ names”. If you like a character it makes you like the name, though, so it’s a bit tricky.

A few that come to mind:

— Uncle Pumblechook
Grotesque but comfy. (The character isn't very nice so it's slightly misleading.)

— Caddy Compson
"Caddy" sounds nice. Also she's officially Candace but only her mother calls her that, which tells you a lot about her mother.

— Titus Groan
Innocent appealing first name dragged down by ponderous surname, which tells you the whole plot.

— Vesper Lynd
Ian Fleming has lots of cool slightly-exotic names for his girls.

— Bilbo Baggins
Some JRRT names are a bit obvious but most are good. Galadriel, Arwen, Frodo, Gandalf.

— Imogen
From Cymbeline. A case of "super-appealing character makes the name appealing", I guess.

— Sherlock Holmes
See above.
