Sup /diy/nosaurs,

I'm working on a forearm bracer for my phone, sorta inspired by the Pip-boy from Fallout. My prototype currently has a case for the phone and an external rechargeable battery, and secures to my arm with two big fat belts of velcro which are glued to the back of the phone case. (The battery pack is not secured to the contraption yet.)

While this works, I know velcro has a limited lifespan and I would like to work something up with side-release buckles or similar, with belts that could be easily replaced should they wear out.

The bracer needs to cinch down fairly tight and not wiggle around; I'm thinking I could cut a bracer out of leather (I have some veg-tan hide in the garage) and line the inside with wetsuit rubber so that it doesn't slide around on my arm. Not sure how comfortable having rubber friction-welded to my arm all day would be, though.

I searched around online for bracers and archery arm guards but couldn't find anything that would cinch down tight enough or be durable enough to wear daily.

I may rig up some additional sensors or some shit to interface with the phone.

Thoughts?

My only design problem at the moment is trying to actually use it like a phone; to use it like a normal cell you have to hold your arm up to your head across your chest. It works but it looks really silly.

Using it in speaker would work, but the speaker is on the back of the phone... doesn't agree with behind mounted to the arm like this.

I think I'm going to make a small amplified speaker system that will plug into the audio jack while the phone is in the bracer.

>slides around
The current prototype doesn't slide around at all if you get it in the right spot and strap it down tight enough. The new leather rig should stay put since the inside is soft, but if not I will pad it with something that will stay put.

>gets beat up
True, if I were wearing a short-sleeve shirt it may get knocked around. The weather has been colder so I've kept it under the sleeve of a hoodie without any issues. I may build some kind of riser bars that come up around the sides to keep it from knocking into things.

>cheap watch
is not as cool as a computer on your wrist!

>take it off to make calls
You can hold your arm across your chest and have the phone up to your ear in a normal phone position and it works fine. You look retarded while doing it but it works. I may get a jawbone if I like the new rig enough to wear it daily.

>long to text
Not too bad actually; I can type quickly with one hand. It's a bit difficult while walking, but I shouldn't be staring at my phone while walking anyways.

You get get a minimal bluetooth earpiece to solve that problem. Here's one in particular: http://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-Discovery-975-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/B002JIMZU4/ref=sr_1_5?s=wireles

Because fuck your pockets.
>seems like it takes a lot longer to text or type as you can only operate it with one hand while in this position.
Swiftkey solves the typing issue as with you really can type with one hand. One could also get a mini sixaxis controller and remap it to basic functions of the phone. I don't know what you could particularly do what has already been done on the phone itself, but it's just and idea.

I've always wanted to do something like this, OP. You have me inspired and curious for moar.

I didn't even think about swiftkey! My phone has swype; I will start practicing with it.

I've considered adding additional sensors/inputs (and I certainly have the know-how) but I haven't thought of anything worth spending the time to develop that the phone doesn't do already.

(It's pretty cool pulling up the native compass/geo-tracking app and running around with it... the gps/compass are really the only 'sensors' I can imagine being relevant to a project like this, and they're already in there. Oh well.)

Cheers!

Yeah, no problem duder. I'm assuming you have an app running that keeps the screen in landscape mode because I'd imagine flailing your arm around to change it from portrait to landscape mode would be a pain. You could see about enhancing the range of the radio or something. It certainly wouldn't hurt. I mean really there isn't much to add to the phone other than trivial things without replacing the phone in its entirety.

Instead of tying it really tight around your arm to stop movement, why not "anchor" it in place by incorporating a "glove" design?

You can then use finger movement gestures for phone use. "Thumbs up to answer a call" or "middle finger to hang up".

I figure, if you're already okay with having some wiring and wearing a permanent glove, you might as well thread 2 additional wires through it. All you have to do is buy a wired headset, amputate one earbud, stick the mic in the pinky and the other earbud in the thumb (or attach velcro to it and keep it tucked away in the wrist). Honestly, not that bad. As far as bluetooth goes, it's probably more practical, but this whole project is pretty impractical. If you're going for a cool, futuristic Pip-Boy DIY project, the finger phone is better than just buying a bluetooth headset, in my opinion.

I may line it with something squishy or soft; I liked the wetsuit material idea. I just don't want it to get nasty under there.

The external battery pack does not generate any noticeable amount of heat, and the phone's battery does not get hot enough to be felt through the silicon case/nylon belts/leather. The phone itself is kind of stood off from the leather by the belts as well, allowing air to cool it a bit.

Why not just flip it over the way people wear some of their watches, so your phone is on the inside of your forearm? That way, you could just hold your arm up to your head on the same side of your body when you have a call.

OP I'd recommend seeing how many of these solutions can be single sourced. Otherwise you end up with multiple gadgets strapped to you. When possible just see what the sensor is that they use and replace it with a microcontroller and put the multiple sensors on it.

There are apps now that can communicate between phone and arduino with bluetooth.

Have you looked into this kinda stuff?

I'm a fairly avid arduino user (pic related... it has the same flamethrower mechanism as the pumpkin), though I haven't messed around with the bluetooth stuff. (I'm sure it would be simple, but the bluetooth shields I've seen are pretty damn big...)

I have a few digisparks coming in the mail; I may try to get one of those to communicate with the phone through serial with a direct connection to the USB port.

A single-sourced sensor array would be awesome; that's definitely the direction I would go if I started adding sensors. For the flamethrower/laser I would probably keep them separate so I could mix and match (and easily leave the house /without/ them.)

OP, you might want to check out laptop/tablet sleeves for the neoprene(wet suit material). You can get one for about $10 and it should be more than enough material for this.

Love your idea OP! Been thinking about this for years! Couldn't get past the design phase because the Fallout Pip-Boy just looks too clunky, and I couldn't cope with any metal on my skin (allergy). But THIS, THIS IS NICE!
If you "were" to lean more towards the canon fallout pipboy, however, might I suggest this? http://www.nukalert.com/
It's small & compact, but looks like it might not incorporate into your design. Pic related. Never know when you WOULD need this, but then if you did, I guess you wouldn't regret owning one. Any ideas?

p.s. Holy Arduino! What is that on the top of your car?

Probably just going to put a layer of it on the inside of the leather so that I don't have to cinch the buckles down as tight to keep it from moving.

Controlling remote controlled vehicles from a wristlet would be awesome!

Yeah I think the flamethrower has to happen! I just need to think of a safe way to ignite it... the spark gap igniter I have is super dangerous, haha.

Yes, the diamondplate went in; pic related!

Damn good idea; I found a wetsuit at a thrift store and it was still expensive.

>>342026
That thing is awesome! I'm not quite prepared to dump 200 bucks on something like that, but that would be a perfect addition to the bracer.

I would probably go with the "K8 Nuke Safeguard" as it has better reviews and is a bit less aesthetically intimidating, haha.

There's a lot of stuff on top of my car...! There's a spare tire, a PA speaker, off-road lights, and an air filter for the snorkel intake.

Also to use arduino source for geiger counter instead of overpriced pleb consumer stuff. You can get far higher quality rad tubes for cheaper.

Don't think the gf would appreciate me trying to pick up chicks... but I would assume it wouldn't work too well in the classical sense. A few girls at university in my tech classes have asked me about it and thought it was cool; made a few friends already because of it.

I wouldn't wear it to a pub or anything like that though... I'm not deluded, haha.

This program has to be one of the coolest, yet weirdest programs I've ever seen. The concept is bizarre to me, and it seems to have a huge following. Found a basic enough tutorial but I don't know how to check the paper size.

How do I do that? It'd be A3, yeah?

Do you guys remember the dildo shaped thing some anon made to let you ¨see¨in the dark, the one that vibrate depending on how close it was of the walls and stuff? That would be awesome, not useful but awesome.

there are two straps, but on the final product you have three. I don't have a smartphone currently, but wouldn't mind trying to build one of these if I ever do get one. Thanks in advance, this is a really awesome project. Would be extremely handy when biking/driving for GPS or directions

The third belt (that goes through where the metal ruler is) is just for supporting the leather piece on the arm.

Also they are not sewed to the leather; they are just threaded through the slits, like the rulers. That way if they fray or shred or get narsty I can just replace them with new ones.

Also, OP, this is amazing stuff. So simple/elegant. I can't believe there aren't more readymade solutions like this on the market. I may have to look into doing this for myself. Thanks for the inspiration/great progress shots and writeups.

>> No.346002

Neat, OP.

I'd consider doing something similar if it wouldn't get smashed to shit while I was working.

I've got a bunch of sketches for some sub-dermal circuitry I thought up in high school, and it used a battery pack similar in design to yours, but there were transdermal battery terminals through fistulae in the skin.

Only thing I would have done differently is wet molded the leather to improve stiffness, and riveted the straps into the leather rather than cutting slits. I can understand the benefit of pliability, but I've always worked with my hands, and a stiffer leather always afforded more durability and abrasion protection.

Interested to see how the wetsuit liner holds up. You might want to install it with some snap buttons so you can remove the liner (if you're attaching it to the rest of the band at all) and machine wash it, because it is going to get nasty, especially if you ever break a sweat. Washability is going to be a huge plus.

Nice frame, although the components are probably the most generic I have ever seen... DT750s, Turnigy Plush, KK2 FC, FlySKY RX, Turnigy batt too....

You should trim the shafts of the motors, and probably get bigger props. at least 8", I can't tell what you have on it right now. Also, how are you going to control the KK2 w/ WiFi?
