anyone ever built a cat tower/tree?

I did one for a crazy cat lady client that was almost 13' tall from the base on the ground floor to the top platform that was attached to a pony wall on the second floor that acted as a railing where you could look down on the first floor.

It was basically like a spiral staircase 36" in diameter but with wider steps (bigger pie pieces) that the cats could lounge on and spaced further apart since they could jump between them and so they were better separated when two of them wanted to be on adjacent steps.

It used a 1 1/2" steel pipe support and the base and platforms were all from 3/4" Baltic birch plywood with that thick poly felt stuff like they put on speaker cabinets covering the tops of the platforms...a cleaner look that carpet and less likely to trap their claws...cheaper too.

From underneath it looked like a weird sculpture morevthatca cat tree or spiral staircase...I used black ABS pipe to space out the platforms and cover the steel support tube, sanded to give it a texture and avoid looking like plumbing pipe.

Cat lady loved it, cats loved it, never had any issues with it but she had some big ass cats so it was built crazy strong in case a 15 pounder decided to skip a few steps and jump from that pony wall to a platform 6 feet down, which they did.

since cat towers/tress exist, it stands to reason that at least one person has built them. i've never seen mexicans picking them in fields, or seen them falling from the sky.
someone is making the damned things.

>In our study, we recruited 1,388 heterosexual American women from 18 to 24 years old to take a short anonymous online survey. In the survey, we presented them with photos of one of two young white men in their early 20s either posing alone or with a cat. To avoid biasing the women’s responses, we randomly presented which photo they saw first. Each participant only rated one man, with and without a cat.
>Each time the participants saw a photo, we asked them to rate the man pictured on several personality attributes, including his masculinity, femininity and dateability. We also asked the women if they defined themselves as a “cat person,” “dog person,” “neither” or “both.”
>Most of the women found the men holding cats to be less dateable. This result surprised us, since previous studies had shown that women found men with pets to have higher potential as partners. They also thought the men holding cats were less extroverted and more neurotic, agreeable and open. Importantly, they saw these men as less masculine, too.

Don't use nails, staples or screws as these prevent harm to the animal. Use glue and different joining methods(wooden dowels, biscuits, etc) for structural parts. Avoid metal and sharp things in general.

Yea, semi professionally, for something durable:
- Use hemp rope, it’s bit more expensive but lasts a hundred times longer than sisal
- If using felt: order a big quantity and make spare pieces. It can’t be machine washed but it accumulates hair and cat vomit and shit so youll need to replace it at some point.
- Use pvc pipes and or wood, not cardboard tubes
- Don’t make all the surfaces soft/fluffy, it looks like crap, cats like to sit on bare softwoods just fine, plus they can scratch it. One cat-sized soft surface per cat is plenty
- You don’t need such a big footprint, just make sure it’s tall (cats like vantage points and climbing).
- Make sure it can get off plenty light. Cats aren’t not going to sit in a shady cold tower like your pic during the day if they can sit in the sun instead
- Try to build something that can be cleaned with a hose or steam cleaner. Because you’re going to want to do that at some point

Avoiding exposed sharp edges, sure, but why wouldn’t you use screws? There’s no proof that cats can use screwdrivers

I just say in general because cats and /diy/ are retarded. If you counter sink the screws and use the correct ones(not drywall screws or pan heads or machine screws that will leave a nut protruding, even a tee nut) and don't use it with the wrong materials you should be fine. Anywhere that the cat may be able to scratch, bite, or jump on or may get knocked into by another animal. I still didn't use screws on the ones I made because if the wood shifts and the screw ends up a little proud then I'm worried at some point the cat will try to scratch that spot and possibly hurt the pads of it's feet or it catches it's claw and pulls it out.

Realistically I don't see that happening but I still wouldn't use them if I ever built another. That's easy for me to say though because I have a small wood shop, I can make a bunch of simple joints quickly but for something like this drilling some holes and using some dowel rod with glue works great, you don't have to worry about appearance of the joints too much if you're covering the whole thing in carpet and rope.

You don't build them. You grow them. Plant your cat in the back yard. Water it. In a few years; Viola! A cat tree.

Cats are pretty comfy, but they're not for me.
With animals like dogs, they're somewhat "confined" to a lower plane, they can't really climb up a dining table or a counter.
Cats can really go up any surface they want, there's no "privacy" whatsoever.
I appreciate that they clean themselves, but they're not anywhere clean enough that I'd want a cat to shove its little ass in my face when I'm sleeping.
Especially given that toxoplasmosis is a phenomenon.

I also live in an "open concept" house, so there are barely any rooms where I can lock myself away for privacy.
In my experience, cats are also destructive as fuck, and with dogs, I can put it out of reach, but there aren't many things (except for industrial shelving with the bottom 3 shelves removed) that can keep a cat out.

Maybe I have Anglo blood and like to keep things in little segregated cages, I don't know, but it just gives me peace of mind knowing something's in its rightful place.

Again, cats are very cute animals, but the destructiveness, lack of privacy, and toxo concerns make cat ownership out of the question for me.
Honestly, much of the aforementioned applies to dogs too, or any "roaming" animal - I like keeping fish and might get a gecko (I've owned a few snakes in the past.)
