Will I regret it?

>> No.1714779

Clamp vices are fine and have uses, but are not a good alternative to a mounted vice unless portability is that important to you.

>> No.1714780

The clamp break down with use quicky in my experience. Don't expect to hold anything larger than a smartphone steady with one of these.

it's €14, that's not a lot to regret. give it a shot.

If you need to put something into it because it needs a little old school persuasion from a single jack you probably will.

>> No.1714916

depends what you wanna do.

I got one of these the other week to help keep a piece of pipe in place, shit didn't work at all. I had to go get the big 98 dollar one, together they worked well tho. If you're trying to just solder or something this thing is fine.

Those are tiny, looks larger on the picture. I guess if you work with small stuff is ok, but as soon as you try to use a hacksaw on anything big it'll come loose.

Funny, just got one that looks 100% identical but has a different name (probably a rebranded item) for my little tinkering space in my apartment, where I can't really be hammering shit all day anyway.

oi, you got a Tinkering loicense for that, mate?

No it's under the 10m2 threshold so no Tinkering license is required.

Just get the Wilton Chinese one for like 160 bucks. I got one of Taiwan one's years ago before they started making them in China, and it's a good vise.

I want American made, though. It's simply a matter of pride. I'm sure a Britisher would want one made in England.

Get it, worst case you're out $14. Cheap way to see if you'll actually use a vice or not. If you end up using it a lot, then upgrade.

want a good one? built it yourself, no you don't need a waterjet, angle grinder, hand dril (and some work with carbide end), simplest stickwelder will do

Good god no, nationalism should have no place in choosing a tool, I'd always go for the best I can afford regardless of where it came from.

if we're doing a thread on preventing regret, am i gonna regret this? i need a metal lathe thats tiny and quiet enough for an apt that I can turn gold and silver rings on. Jeweler by profession but im looking into machining to avoid having to cast molds for simple bands

I can see literally no reason to get this over one of the 7x lathes. It's not much cheaper, but substantially more crap.

Look at old jewelers/watchmakers lathes which use hand tools, files and gravers to cut metal. The way I prevent regret is buy quality after thorough research. Study the varieties of lathe and attachments.

Thatl turn silver and gold, but you might want to spend the extra money and buy the Harbor Freight ones.
They are better equipped and insanely popular. Youll be able to get parts and do modifications and all sorts of stuff with the fanbase it has.

Ive literally never heard or seen the grizzly lathe before.

I have absolutely broken a clone of this thing by using a bar on the handle to tighten it up. Bent the slides now its really tough to open and close.
So use your brain I guess don't chop trees with a chisel

a friend of mine had a wood shop full of grizzly tools; never had a problem from any of them, all were trued from the factory, none of them bogged down beyond what's normal when working with black walnut and other dense hardwoods. I've no experience with their metal working line, though.

I have a very similar one (the $15 orange Pony vice from Amazon). It's very sturdy, I've lifted up the entire 200 pound desk it's attached to trying to bend something with it before. Definitely worth the price. Some vice is better than no vice every time.

Do not buy. If you're spending less than 2 grand get a used one, at least those usually come with tooling.

yes it's rough on the edges and will scratch your ballsack during usage
