Some people get all uppity about leaving the key in a lathe chuck like someone will just run by randomly, switch the gears to the highest speed and then turn it on for some unknown reason... and then the key will magically shoot out of the chuck and fly across an entire building to the elementary school playground across the street and impale some kid right in the eye.

>> No.2744886

>>2744880

Even though the key flying out of the chuck is the usual stated reason, I don't think that's actually the most likely problem. It's more likely that, if you have a well-fit key, it will get jammed against the bed of the lathe. If your lathe is light, that might just be it. But if it's big and has gears (like the old 17" LeBlond I used to have) it could easily do anything from mangle the key/ways, destroy gears, or, worse, you grab at it in panic-induced stupidity and you no longer have a functional hand.

Source: I committed this sin once. ONCE. I lucked out and the key fell out of its loose fit fairly easily, but it did make a horrible noise, put a nice ding in the ways, and threw the key in my general direction for good measure.

Certainly I have rolled my eyes at stories of keys embedded in block walls etc. The benefit of the saga is you can Id a bullshitter immediately.
Machining is boring mostly, some people like that some people dont and have to talk it up.

>> No.2744921

>>2744877
It's not even really so much about the likelihood of it being thrown, jamming, catching and dragging the operators appendages, etc. as much as it displays a certain attitude towards best practices that doesnt just apply to one thing.

There's tons of "rules" about potentially dangerous power tools that are OK to break when there's no other reasonable choice to get the job done, but this isn't one of those.

It falls under the heading of "may not help or matter, but it *could*, and it can't hurt".

People who are faced with that choice and insist on their right to choose the less potentially safe option for no practical reason are the kinds of people who get themselves and others hurt...and this particular practice is a big sign saying "I'm one of those people".

The office lady that calls herself the “office mom” got tired that all the machinist just stroll in whenever they feel like it and took it upon herself to warm up the machines.

She found an old SOP we had on a dusty clip board.

She turned all the machines on in the morning, with tons of parts in vises that we stopped mid cycle to continue cycles in the morning.

Instead when you power on a cnc machine it starts at line zero

This bitch scrapped hundreds of dollars in parts by running drills and taps through the holes twice, double cut 5 tenths tolerances so they’re out of spec and just basically fucked shit up

Women with “power” in the company get uppity.

One of them was rushing a part to a customer for whatever reason thought she could fabricate something in a lathe from a sheet of arcrylic since she’s watched us do it for years

Work flew out of the lathe fixtures immediately

They didn’t repair the ceiling after that to show first year students what can happen if you leave it in. The guy who caused it got a mandatory training and leaving the key in unattended now gets you two weeks banned iirc.

But then, that was a shop where 20+ students would just use the lathes in turn and walk around at any time so the chances of they key hitting someone was pretty big

Pure absentmindedness. Too busy thinking about owlussy or something, you just kind of start skipping steps on autopilot, and put the clutch in on the 2000RPM setting without realizing you left the key in after moving the indicator off the part.

You WILL do dumb shit in the shop every now and again. Humans aren't perfect. The best you can do is being in the habit of doing things in a manner that minimizes potential damage when that inevitable dumb shit happens.

I've never used a real lathe so I can't comment, but it's interesting that my Harbor Freight toy lathe has a shield over the chuck that you have to lower before the motor can run, and you have to remove the chuck key to lower that shield.

(I don't know what that other smaller shield does. Mine went in the garbage first day.)

It's there to keep chips from flying at you. I really need to make one for my bigger lathe...I'm just waiting for the day I crash into the chuck because a blue-hot chip flew into the hand working the power feed lever at just the wrong moment.

The other guard over the chuck is not just annoying, it actually prevents you from working close to the chuck. I didn't take it off, though. I did like the idea of it preventing the key-in-chuck accident and it helped with oil/coolant being flung everywhere. I just cut it shorter so that it wasn't in the way.

There’s a guy in Canada who sells rings that he turned down in a lathe for like $300 a piece. They have maybe $30 worth of materials in them and take about an hour.
>simple ring blank
>semi-precious stones of various colors and sizes
>CA glue (literally super glue but ultra thin and clear)
>several ways of sanding and polishing
It really doesn’t take much, but most people don’t have access to a decent lathe.

There are guides online to making these rings. It really is quite simple. A thin layer of glue is applied to a ring blank (which is shaped like a channel, generally) while it’s slowly rotated. The gemstone is poured on, and more glue is added. Then more gemstone, and more glue, and so on until the ring blank is filled. As the glue is applied, and accelerant is sprayed so it dries almost instantaneously. The inlay material is then milled down evenly with the top of the ring blank. It’s then sanded and polished via very fine wet sanding or jewelers paste (well over 5k grit).

I think with a little knowhow and some shady Instagram shit it could be quite lucrative. It’s also easy to get into just to screw around with, the main hurdle being the lathe. Pic is a popular option of adding pet hair on top of crushed malachite.
