Impressive.

With this most recent achievement, fate has in a single stroke, marked the decline of the Dougn'ts and spelled a new era of wondrous prosperity and peaceful maritime dominance for Doug, who promises to firmly stand in sharp contrast to the historically fearful attitude of the USCG and naval architects raised by women, and the cruel subjugation they brought to the humbler boat builders of the world. With the blessings of clapped out school bus engines, direct-to-deck anchor chain storage, hassle free waste disposal systems, dual use light pole technology, ready to deploy navigational hazards, dynamically shifting lead ballasts, floating lightweight anchor cables, water cooled fuel tanks, and automatic propeller unpitching will be the instruments with which Doug affirms his noble stewardship of 21st century oceans and offers aspiring sailors in their cubicles a different option; an humane alternative to the depredations of maritime authorities and the opportunity for more equitable and dignified motor-sailing.

What did you build today?

Even better, he "designed", fabricated and installed (and subsequently re-"designed" and re- worked) his dedicated gangway/safety ladder but there's no corresponding passway through his raised bulwarks so once people are at the top of the gangway they must hoist themselves over what amounts to a pony wall.
It's not like there's no breaks or gaps in the bulwarks, the one at the bow is large enough for a cow to pass through and doesn't even have a door like a normal passageway on a vessel with bulwarks like that, so one has to assume that not putting one at that dedicated passageway point was a conscious refusal to accommodate weak people raised by women who might fear a trip hazard as they are suspended over the water and trying to make that transition to the Seekers deck, or the reverse.

If anyone with common sense suggested making an unobstructed passageway there at any point in the design/build process I'd bet money the response would be "NO. If you're afraid of crawling over the bulwark, don't come on my boat".

This makes no sense- 6 mph × 12 hr days is 72 miles per day, 60 if you do 10 hrs/day...
That would cover 1000 miles in just under 14 or 16 days, respectively...
The river route from Russelville to NOLA is obviously more twisty and longer than the highway route as a result, but still follows a roughly similar path...the driving distance is under 520 miles.
Even if you figure double that road distance and he did 5 mph for ten hours a day that's still under three weeks.
But realistically it's probably under 750 miles and at 60 miles/day (which he's shown he can do even with locks) that's 12.6 days.
With "minimal rest stops" why would it take twice as long as a pace thats in no way ambitious or speedy?

In one shot you can also see the sink uses box store angle stops which wouldn't be terrible *if* he'd bought halfway decent brass 1/4 turn ones, but instead they're the shittiest 1950s style chrome plated pot metal gate valves with the oval handles.
Can't imagine what other cheap ass cost cutting measures are buried under more layers of conduit and pex and hydraulic lines and household appliances and lead ingots.

Funny thing is that 99.999% of the time I've ever seen a cruising sail boat equipped with a washer/dryer it's been in response to an ultimatum by a wife threatening to scuttle the dream of living aboard if she has to give up that convenience. The rest of the time it's been installed in a production/spec boat in anticipation of her scuttling the sale for the same reason when her starry- eyed wannabe pirate since he was six hubby drags her to the boat show.
Men like Doug who consider doing without and taking the hard path and being uncomfortable to be character builders to be embraced simply don't prioritize household appliances and in the cruising world consider them a mark of un-seriousness and ignorance.

He's posted a video of the open house and while he's on his best behavior and quite affable, there's a definite "great benevolent explorer meets the curious and childlike natives" vibe that's pretty weird, complete with doling out of trinkets by the captain and acceptance of gifts brought out via canoe by scantily clad corn-fed Arkansas wahines.
This introduces whole new twist; he obviously loves the adulation but will he and the crew be able to control themselves and not exploit the opportunities for abuse that being put on a pedestal creates?

I can definitely see trouble ahead should he or one of his crew disrespect or impregnate a local chieftains daughter, or if they realize that he's not the return of Quetzalcoatl on a steel chariot and rebuff him.

I'm only partially kidding, there is precedent-

"De Soto had encouraged the local natives to believe that he was a deity, specifically an "immortal Son of the Sun," as a ploy to gain their submission without conflict. Some of the natives had already become skeptical of de Soto's deity claims, so his men were anxious to conceal his death. The actual site of his burial is not known. According to one source, de Soto's men hid his corpse in blankets weighted with sand and sank it in the middle of the Mississippi River during the night"

Washers on a boat make no sense out on salt water, unless you have a big enough boat to have a desalinization system for it - and big enough diesels to run them. Most people just use buckets and rainwater, with occasional visits onshore to laundromats.
That's one aspect of boat living people don't understand - you make a lot of compromises, unless you're really wealthy. If you're sailing in hot climates, you just live in a bathing suit. In colder weather...well, you just stink until you can't bear it, and break out the buckets.
Doug's washing machine fits perfectly into the folly he's built - impractical, dumb, and shows a clear lack of understanding what living on a boat is. And a waste of diesel to run.

It is a household washer. Boaters usually look into compact RV washers for boats - a full sized unit intended for the house is just...dumb - probably donated or from the house, instead of buying a more appropriate unit.
And yes, the hand powered spinners and washing bags are very common, on smaller boats.
Boat living and RV living have a lot of overlap. But some things, like showers and washing machines, full sized ovens, that kind of thing? Just dumb.
Imagine being in a storm with strong swells, and you're incapacitated by your legs being broken from a washing machine breaking loose and flying across your cockpit, and dying.
With Doug, it's less IF he's going to be injured/killed, it's how.

>That's one aspect of boat living people don't understand - you make a lot of compromises, unless you're really wealthy.

Exactly...and even if you're wealthy there's still compromises in the form of balancing the possibility of some rare but catastrophic circumstance occurring, with a desire to take the chance that it won't happen and devoting attention and resources to unnecessary gadgets, ornamentaion and experimentation instead.
In that sense staying away from something like AC might make sense, but Doug has made the wrong choice SO many times and went for needless bullshit like dragons and floating anchor rode while dismissing basic concepts regarding equipment and general seaworthiness, while openly mocking the idea that he might learn from others mistakes.
I've said it before, he's not at all unique in that regard and the other thing non- cruisers don't get is that collecting anecdotes about these kinds of clowns is both a traditional source of amusement and wonder, and also highly educational for warning noobs who are willing to consider worst case scenarios and learn not to do the same without repeating them.
Everything about Doug and Seeker is a cautionary tale.

People who havent lived the cruising life dont get that every fucking thing this dumbass has done wrong is something other dumbasses have done too, and in many cases got themselves and their crews- or other people- hurt or killed.

I've been fascinated with Cousteau's Calypso since I was a kid - that's a research boat, and they didn't half-ass anything like Doug is - a LOT of work went into that boat being blue water safe, especially in polar waters. They were on a proven WWII hull, with proven gear across the board. (For the time)
I can only recall one death on the Calypso - and it was from a helicoper accident on shore.
People DO build boats and sail around the world, and into the polar seas, but they use proven designs, like you said, developed from the accidents and mistakes of others.
Doug has this wierd thing, maybe it's autism, or OCD, or some sort of mental illness, that mistakes only count if HE does them. Or he's just a callous asshole who's gonna get someone killed because of his assholishness.

Granted, if he could get that floating can into international waters, he'll be boarded, robbed, and killed, and dumped overboard, anyway. Piracy is real, all over the globe. He can't outrun anything in the Seenker, and god knows he's not gonna arm himself.

Haven't seen anything like an "argument"...on the contrary, the discussion about it itt is almost universally in agreement that it's dumb, and its existence on board is a manifestation of Doug's complete cluelessness and Seeker's not being any kind of serious cruising vessel.

That's because unlike the Dongers slavishly defending their messiah, the people talking about his washing machine clearly have actual experience doing what Doug only pretends to be engaged in...

Seeker now also serves as a kind of talisman or shrine whose existence is a seen as a source of affirmation and even protection for people who are desperate to feel like part of some great collective Happening and are willing to believe anyone who says the right things and triggers their feels. IOW the kinds of people who are susceptible to cult programming.
It's all there: the inscriptions all over the boat that must be revered, the symbolism like dragon sculptures, Doug's cheeseball philosophizing and talk of the Seeker "family", the "what did you build today?" mantra that's as much a cudgel to beat down heretics and identify those who dont follow the teachings as it is a legitimate question...
even the name "Seeker" is supposed to evoke a quasi-religious/mystical vibe and ward off detractors, as if anyone who doesn't support it is against the positive aspects of what the term traditionally represents.
The willingness of devotees to hand over money without question and devote time and work under unpleasant circumstances and rigid control by the leader (like a monk) and especially the irrational responses to any criticism by his minions are textbook cult follower behavior, as is the meek and supplicating manner in which those who dare to ask Doug questions approach him, and take their lumps without complaint when this displeases him and he cuts them down or banishes them for challenging his decisions.
That's why these people cling so desperately to any shred of positivity they can, and can't allow any dissent to go unchalleged.
It's a cult, that like many cults may have been more benign when it began but has morphed into something weird as the mastermind has grown accustomed to being in charge and seeks to protect his position.
They're the same kinds of people who will keep believing a doomsday preacher no matter how many times doomsday doesn't arrive, because to admit they were taken for a ride would destroy their entire world.

There was some concern expressed that Dong was exactly the kind of person who might doxx anyone who took advantage of the tour to document things he won't show and defend...maybe, maybe not but some of his followers are certainly crazy and committed enough to try to punish anyone who did so.
When the person who took those pics said he was going to do it and jokingly called it "espionage" a bunch of them flipped out about how deliberately trying to damage his boat was way out of line...when people said WTF are you on about? they insisted that the comment could only be taken to mean he was going to physically damage the boat.

It took a few minutes to realize that these moron Donger zealots didn't realize that "espionage" and "sabotage" weren't the same thing, LOL.

There's no grey water tank (documented/seen), only black water. And apparently it's really tiny.
It's currently being emptied with compressed air because he can't be bother to fix his nightmare plumbing (there's a video about it ~1month ago).
People suspect he's dumping everything straight in the water since he doesn't visit marinas and lacks a way to properly empty his black water tank. To do so, he needs to reach the tank directly with a pipe all the way through the boat and to the tank main opening. The tank is located in a very unfortunate position (very low as well).
He shits in a bucket anyway, the barely functional toilets are for guests and "crew".

Big difference between a defense and facile excuses pulled out of your ass.
Main one being a defense has to be consistent and can't just be abandoned for another explanation that is contradictory to the first.

Especially not when youve documented it all in black and white, like pic related vs the following from his blo-

That's part of the grift, sell people on the grand idea and good intentions and the simps will swallow any excuse for failing to fulfill that vision, even going as far as to defend calling a boat that had never sailed and literally cannot sail a "sailing vessel".

But just to flow up on the "we're a yacht and will never sell rides thing, here's more from the associated charity page-

"You’ve heard how Seeker is to be a work boat, but you might not be aware that we plan to make her available for research purposes.

Once Seeker is in the water, ***she will be leased for about a dollar a month*** to the Sea Chest Foundation, a 501c3 not-for-profit US Corporation."

The whole reason something like that is done for a symbolic $1 fee is specifically to make it a legal lease transaction. It's just as commercial as leasing office space to a non profit charity would be, and just like that commercial lease the laws regarding the property being suitable, safe and properly equipped must be met.

His legal/ regulatory compliance planning and reasoning is just as half baked and likely to sink him as his boat.

He and others in his crew insist that he's not discharging waste into the MKARNS system and that Seekers holding tanks have been in use and pumped out since launching, and since there's no "honeypot" mobile pumpout boats there, if he is to be believed he'd have to have done it at a marina.
Also contrary to claims by his minions, he has no watermaker and is ferrying water aboard by tender from....somewhere.
Finally, in the video of the onboard meet and greet with the Russelville natives, Doug specifically mentions the marina supplying a pontoon and driver to ferry people back and forth, and earlier had suggested that interested visitors could rent a boat there to make the trip.
inb4
>hur dur, what's the matter with that?
There's nothing wrong with marinas or making use of their facilities and services...but Doug has repeatedly ranted about how he doesn't need marinas, wouldn't use them because he's self sufficient, and uses disparaging slurs like "marina queens" to describe boats that aren't self sufficient like he claims Seeker is, and kept anchored out.
In one of his last videos he lectures people who dont use their boats as often as he deems appropriate about how boats aren't intended to live in marinas, even as he waxes poetic about how the Russelville marina has lots of people working on their boats...he acts as if this is some rare circumstance that elevates it into praiseworthy territory because he's a clueless non-sailor, and since the whole thing is a gladhanding PR effort he gives the Russleville marina his blessing because this makes *those* marina tenants "a maker family" ( barf).

Over-engineered in some parts, from the outside it appears to follow "best practices", but underneath the shiny layer we see poor architectural choices, poor implementation choices that have essentially doomed proper operation, from the outset.

If he actually follows through, deciding on buddy boating will be one of the first times he's shown any *real* progress as far as learning how to be an actual cruising boater with a chance of doing anything besides becoming a statisric.
What people who've never done it don't realize is that cruisers tend to look out for each other because there's lots of bad things that can happen even to the best prepared boats with competent crews, which is a huge part of why Doug gets advice on things like anchoring and other technical matters; its just whats expected because it really is a community. Even when someone is a blowhard/clown with a janky boat, people know that they will be the ones dealing with it when that clown gets in over his head and cant bluff hiss way out of it, so even when people don't take advice and act like ungrateful dicks, others will still help them and try to get them to see the light before tragedy strikes. Sometimes it works well enough that people like Doug have a real epiphany and begin to welcome advice and *really* learn to avoid making mistakes, and become seamen.

I doubt that's whats happened here, but it's a good sign for his passengers and crew and otherscon the water near him...makes me wonder how much the film crew/ documentary plays into the decision.
It was only a few weeks ago that he was ranting regularly that he'd singlehand the boat before doing (something sensible), then he hit a rock wall with film crew aboard, blew it off as "uneventful"...and now he's got a fixed travel itinerary and an escort vessel.
I guarantee you that film crew didn't just go "ho hum" when Sekeer high centered on that wall, even people with no experience know that the sounds and motions involved are not normal or good. And 15 minutes of trying to get the boat off using a tender and warps because the main engine's reverse doesn't work would have seemed like hours with all the grinding/screeching noises and commotion involved.

>the film crew/documentary plays into the decision
It's six more weeks until Seeker leaves Russellville so maybe the film crew is off filming other things.

???
The point is that he's not moving on without an escort boat.
Also in the video on Facebook announcing the buddy boat and itinerary he states that two film crew will be on the escort vessel.
It will no doubt be convenient for getting shots of Seeker underway from off the boat, but that could be achieved with any small boat or a drone or from shore, and doesn't require another full sized vessel traveling with them 24/7 for the entire trip to FL. Reading between the lines of that video it sounds like at least some of the film crew wanted different lodgings and/or a ready refuge that didn't rely on Seeker.

As for waiting to leave, he's got a shit ton of incomplete/ damaged systems to work on if he's to have any chance of handling the Mississipi river, and also it's hurricane season so nobody is faulting him for staying put for a few weeks.
Personally I sense a shift where he's really on his best behavior because he needs to morph from DIY builder guy to spiritual leader of bold adventures about which documentaries and TV shows are made.
That means playing ball by other people's rules and some degree of ass kissing.
So the "fuck you, I can stay or leave as I please", "fuck you, if you want safety don't come on my boat", " fuck everybody, I'll singlehand it before accomodating other peoples concerns" etc. Doug has to STFU, or at least try.
Only thing that remains to be seen is whether that was the real Doug and he'll snap under the stress, or was it all an act by a guy whose rugged Individualism and DGAF attitude will be dumped so he can be a more appealing cuck for mainstream reality media whoredom.

It's such obviously orchestrated and inorganic damage control/spin that one has to wonder if it's something the crew is expected to engage in as part of their duties, since there's obviously a major campaign underway to rehabilitate Doug's image and make people forget about the snide, arrogant, belittling bully who doesn't feel any responsibility for crew safety, shits in a bucket and declares "Fuck the Coast Guard Commandant" publicly.

Washers aren't that unusual even on smaller yachts, but they're usually real high efficiency combo units, and I'm not sure what this thing is. I think he's just slapped a front loader in there and is planning on line drying.

Water makers aren't that extravagant an item, they don't even take up that much space. Doug's got plenty of space, especially once he gets rid of that thing he cobbled together. His big problem is going to be power though. He's got enough for whatever, but he's just got real shitty efficiency, so he's going to be burning a ton of diesel doing it. He does have a crap ton of tankard, which will help him stretch the time between tank fills. He's such a wanler though that it's hard to root for him.

>Water makers aren't that extravagant an item, they don't even take up that much space.
In one of his video tours around the time of launching he shows/ mentions a watermaker but it certainly didn't look like anything commercially built.
But the other day he posted about loading water from shore and water usage on the last leg of his trip, and mentioned having a functional 300 gal tank and another the same size that "needs to be repaired".
Odd that in a discussion of fresh water usage/ capacity he never mentioned the watermaker, unless it's completly useless or not there anymore.

Better first question is why should anyone ever assume that Doug's assessment of how/why something broke is correct?
He's proven time and time again that his troubleshooting process is plagued by ego dreiven assumptions and disregard for protocol, and general impatience...combined with a habit of following fruitless paths that he glorifies as a superior and enlightened approach that has great learning value *specifically* because it results in failure.
It's just as likely that the glass exploding as Doug was attempting to clean it was a coincidence that he erroneously assumed was the cause of the tempered glass blowing up.
One glaring issue is the fact that that unit was never intended to be installed like that; it's a countertop appliance whose documentation states clearly must be mounted on its legs and have 4" of clearance on both sides, rear panel (where it vents) and above it.
Besides the obvious fire risk of jamming it in a wooden cabinet with zero clearance, that lack of ventilation and ability to diffuse heat is likely to cause retained heat to build up beyond specs, and try to escape though the one side of the unit that isn't boxed in, which is that glass door. In the pic, it appears he's even caulked the gap where the countertop sits directly on top of the unit, its insane.
So when you consider things like thermal shock you can't assume that the glass is within normal operating temps, it may be dangerously close to the extreme upper limit of any safety margin built in, where the tiniest temperature differential or even just a bit of normal jarring or twisting action during opening/closing it could trigger it to shatter, or with another ten minutes of on time it might do it spontaneously.
That glass in that installation no doubt gets far hotter than it ever should, and the edges very likely soak up far more of that excess heat than the center, and set up exactly the kinds of unbalanced stresses that trigger tempered glass to blow up.

The adding lead (to an already grossly overweight boat) part is true, but it's important to acknowledge that Seeker has a permanent built-in twist along her longitudinal axis that makes it impossible for the boat to not list; even if you average it out in the exact middle at best she'll always list a little bit one way in the bow and a little the other way in the stern (aka "front" and "back" in Doug's nautical vocabulary).
Not only is this of no concern to Doug, he mocks the idea that it should be in one of the (now abandoned) tender build videos by noting that a similar twist is developing and joking "thats OK, we *like* hulls with a twist!"

The boat at rest is in "initial stabilty" but there is overall stability, which accounts for the need to have the ship's ability to right itself even in wind and wave conditions.

Lol, by that "logic since" I can break free of the ground under my own power and "move through the air", I can fly.

Sorry, desperate semantics boy. Only one moving goal posts is you -

33 CFR § 83.03 - General definitions (Rule 3).

(c) The term sailing vessel means any vessel under sail provided that propelling machinery, if fitted, is not being used.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/33/83.03

That has never happened once, and by his own admission Dong has no set procedure in mind for the running righing needed to make it even possible, and intends to determine what will be needed by trial and error. On a sail configuration that is thousands of years old and very simple, he plans to invent his own arrangement and can't even hoist the sails completely after 15 years of calling Seeker a "sailing vessel" in every video he does.
He left for Kerr lake declaring that completing the rigging was a top priority and now it's not, even as his minions declare everything up to speed and on track and demand people interpret the word "sailing" using the broadest possible definition of the term that includes any and all vessels that float and can move.

Hilarious cope and seethe.

When you think about it, the concern trolling about minimizing clicks and attention is as ill conceived and delusional as Doug's activities.
If you think it's somehow going to hurt him if only you can convince people to boycott him, that's just sad, desperate control freak bullcrap.
When Doug makes money from page views and related ads and donations it just means that the dumb minions are getting fleeced harder, and between them and Doug they actually deserve to suffer for their stupidity for supporting him just for the feels; at least the con man gets some benefit from the con besides good feels and simping rights.
Doug and his janky project aren't really unique either for jankiness or hubris, but the cult- like uncritical support no matter how long he stalls or how many projects/plans he abandons is pretty unique in my experience. No, a sixth grader who is at or beyond the age of legal majority would meet the minimum age requirements to apply to take the bar exam in juridictions where that was the age requirement, would not where that age is 21, and would be turned down anyway based on not meeting the educational requirements that still exist even where a law degree isnt a prerequisite for taking the bar exam.

inb4 "well, a person scheduled to take the bar exam and their child who is in sixth grade might have their bodies switched the night before the test by magical fortune cookies given to them by a meddling old Chinese woman, and the sixth grader passing the bar while the parent freaked out over a pimple would be one of the zany, madcap situations that hilariously ensued.

>> No.2463067

Nobody said it wasn't a viable action ("strategy" is giving Doug far too much credit for planning).

The point you gloss over and deflect from is that when questioned about why his "sailing vessel" cany sail after 14 years of construction and outfitting, Doug and his minions bristle at the very thought that he be asked to explain the lack of progress and perpetually postponed sail trials, and still pretend that he is a model of tenacity and problem solving whose word is gold....when in reality he's just as likely to give up- in the case of the sub, a week after its first failed test.

If he said "like everything else, if there is a problem I will correct it OR I will abandon the unfinished project for someone else to complete" then that would be entirely different and would indeed represent a "strategy" with some merit.
But he didn't do that, and instead pontificates about patience and "faith" and lies about how "everything else" has been corrected.

A typical time to complete a 30 to 40 foot steel sailing vessel would be 2-3 years. There's plenty of people on YouTube who have done that.

Doug's boat, essentially 4 times larger, would therefore take 8 to 12 years. But after 12 years, it should be DONE... but it isn't, with all systems unproven and of questionable overall seaworthiness...

However Doug seems to be turning it around on his questioner, as if the very fact of his incompetent building and design choices which have taken "all these years" is proof of his ability to be effective.

Seeker is 74-75 ' (both numbers have been cited) ...thats 2.5× the size of a 30" boat and less tgan twice the size of a 40 footer, not four times larger.
As another anon also points out, the build time can't be accurately extrapolated in the simplistic linear manner you used- a 60' boat doesn't take twice as long to build as a 30 footer of the same basic type, economy of scale applies to build time as well so 1.5- 1.75 times the build time is very do-able.
Even with a small non- pro crew a boat like Seeker could easily have been completed in 5-6 years if they used common sense and standard build techniques and planning and suitable materials and equipment.

>> No.2463356

>>2463346
It's not linear; by making it linear I gave Doug the benefit of the doubt. It's less than linear as you increase in size.

When you have a sailboat (again giving Doug the benefit of the doubt that it is a sailboat since it has never sailed) that has 1 engine as as 35 foot sailboat for auxiliary power, you don't need 4x the time to install 1 engine just because the boat is 4x the volume. If anything the additional space should make it faster, not slower, to install. Same for tankage that doesn't have to be shoe-horned like it does on a smaller boat.

And this is repeated across all the systems - 1 propeller, 1 engine, 1 rudder assembly, 1 instrument panel, pumps for clean and dirty water, all pretty much the same as on a smaller boat, etc.
