I've had the same mattress for 15 years and it's finally broken on me, can't lay on it anymore without getting stabbed by springs.

I don't have the money for a real mattress, and I don't want to spend $300 on a used mattress or some fiberglass infested piece of Chinese shit from Amazon.

Could I /diy/ my own mattress? I was thinking of getting 3 or 4 foam mattresses toppers and stacking them up like in pic related and throwing a sheet over it. Is there any reason I couldn't do that?

Have you checked the price of foam mattress toppers lately? You might not be saving much by the time you get enough for your stack.

Otherwise if you have any sort of credit score at all, you can easily qualify for some 60 month zero interest credit card that all of the furniture stores do all the time. Pay $8/mo for a decent mattress to save your back.

I saw some 4 inch ones at Walmart for $80 or so. $240 isn't that bad for a new mattress

I think you’re going to fucking sink into them.

There are all sorts of memory foam mattresses you can get online now that are vacuum packed. My brother got one and it’s actually pretty good. Don’t know what it costs, but you can get everything on credit if you have some sort of credit score.

Density is the issue, toppers and the top layers of multi density foam mattresses are usually very soft and compressible, and stacking low density foam on top of more low density foam doesn't make it more dense.
The low end of foam mattress prices has gone way down over the last few years, you can get a queen size for $250-$300 all day long.

Just an example, note the "compare with similar items" links
https://www.amazon.com/Olee-Sleep-Infused-Memory-Mattress/dp/B016WJWC0S/ref=mp_s_a_1_12?keywords=foam+mattress&qid=1661098713&sr=8-12

No, it's not as good as a $1000-$1200 foam mattress, but those probably won't last 4× as long or be 4× as comfortable either. But more importantly, it's almost guaranteed to be better than any number of cheap Walmart toppers.

The other thing about stacking foam is that unless you glue them the layers *will* creep out of alignment from moving on top of them, and even a tight fitting mattress cover won't stop it.

This (again).

A halfway decent 2-3" at Walmart will set up back close to 100.

I bought link related https://www.amazon.com/Queen-Mattress-Nature-Memory-Medium/dp/B07ZKKJC8N/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1BUXRCDGZF2P5&keywords=iyee%2Bnature%2B8&qid=1661110539&sprefix=lyee%2Bnature%2B8%2Caps%2C59&sr=8-2&th=1
$209 shipped to your door. Sleeps fine enough and has held up well for 5 or so years. Opened it up and it's just foam, no chinesium inside

If you're a big boy idk if 8" will be enough for ya, I weigh 180 and sleep fine on it.

You can buy a waterbed mattress, heater, and liner for under $300. The frame depends on your imagination and can be as simple as a rectangle of 2x12 lumber placed directly on the floor. I got into waterbeds after a back injury 10 years ago and I can sleep on regular mattresses now but I refuse to go back.

I would look for a used mattress on craigslist or facebook marketplace.
They are extremely cheap used, as almost noone wants a used mattress. Even high end 3000$ ones commonly go for near giveaway prices.

Bought my current mattress this way, it's a Serta, it was 50$ from someone's guest room where it rarely got used. It looked and smelled new, so I'm happy.

If you're deadset on new foam, consider trying to find a foam outlet if you're in a large city. They sell this crap to people making furniture and it's a lot cheaper than buying any kind of toppers or chinese made shit, and you can specify the density that you want. Cut it roughly to size with a bread knife and you're done.

Or if you're one of god's chosen people, you can order a Purple mattress or any of the other expensive foam mattress brands that offers an extended trial, then tell them you want to return it and send your shitty current mattress with the junk guys who come to pick it up. Keep the expensive one for free.

Bend the sharp ends of the broken springs downwards using pliers.

Get a cheap 4in thick trifold.
If you're fat get 6in thick
If the folds bother you then build a wood frame that compresses it slightly
If it's poor sleep quality, put it on a thick rug or maybe get a topper

Can be had for maybe a hunge or less.

Shove a bunch of straw into a sack. That was the commoner's mattress until ~200 years ago. It was good enough for thousands of years of humans it'll be good enough for you OP.

I honestly don't understand people who cheap out on things like mattresses and shoes.
You buy something cheap, it's gonna be cheap quality.
Save up and buy something decent.

Avoid this if you can. I slept on stacked foam pads for a few years while I was very broke and it fucked up my back royally. I would try to pony up the cash for something at least decently comfortable.
