there are two switches underneath that. I have tried holding both switches in with a screwdriver but I still get the same clicking noise.

The click is the lid lock solenoid trying to engage. There is a cam which prevents the lid lock solenoid from engaging until the tag on the lid pushes it out of the way. He's either fucked the cam or the switches, likely the cam itself. If the mechanism has been damaged in such a way that the switches are not engaging, the solenoid will keep trying to click in as the controller does not know when it is engaged.

You can either directly bypass the micro switches (which may also be damaged, you'll also need to work out if lid closed equals an open or closed switch) or just pony the fuck up for the part and make the hamfisted little faggot do the households laundry for the next month (or sell off some of his vidya shit).

You can press the start button for 3 seconds and stop it at any point. Of course you have to wait for it to stop rotating.

Or you can do what I did when I was curious, unscrew the plastic thing from the lid and leave it permanently plugged into that hole in your second pic. That won't fix what he broke, but as everyone else is saying, it shouldn't be that hard to bypass or fix it for way less than $100.

That is what i did for my mom's washing machine. If i remember right I even got fancy and cut it off flush and epoxied a shoulder on it so it was pretty much flush when installed and not an eyesore.
