1727427 No.1727427 [Reply] [Original]

So the gist is that while cycling out rounds of my 30/30, (had to scare something or other off out of my yard.), I fucked up and misfired inside my house. No big deal, right? Well I was lucky enough for this to go straight into my hot water heater. Which is located under the sink and to the right, in my kitchen. I’m renting so I scrambled to try and figure out how to turn off the water and electricity to the heater, and you’ll see in pictures below how fucked that was.

But anyway my main point is that I can’t afford a brand new 40 gal water heater for a house that ain’t mine. Lease is up in March and then it’s not my problem and that’s basically spelled out in the lease the land lady printed off the internet.

I’m attempting to patch a hole made by a 150 grain hollow point round that went through a few pieces of wood before striking the heater. I highly suspect the bullet is still inside as I can find 0 entry “wounds” on the other side, not even dents. Range was maybe 10 yards.

So after cutting off the power and water, and draining the tank all I had was a silicon caulk substance and duct tape for any attempt at repair. Everyone online says just replace but that $400 I don’t have around the holidays. Maybe in a month I can replace? I need help with temporary or if possible, semi permanent solutions. And I sort of need suggestions fast as I have until Saturday(3ish days) to make it seem like nothing happened.

I’ve applied a layer and sealed the hole with silicon, my next step after having heated fans and dehumidifiers blow on it all night was to go to Lowe’s and buy that flex tape shit they show on TV. (Dumb college kid here, same guy who fixed his door with kindling and foam.)
If some wiser anons are out there and see this in time I’d greatly appreciate the advice. Is usually ask my dad but I’m just too embarrassed on this one.

I didn’t even want to own a firearm but shit bigger than me has tried to get inside my house before.
I do my best to be safe, and this was pointed downwards and away from anything I didn’t want to harm as I was emptying the rifle. I don’t have much choice but to lever cycle the rifle and that simultaneously chambers a round and pulls the hammer back. It’s easy to try and go through a motion so common and then suddenly it goes off because you levered it with your finger slightly off position and suddenly you put a bullet through something.

This time it was a chair, desk, and eventually my hot water heater.

This is great. If your trying to save that one I would try brazing some sheet metal on it. Maybe over the silicone depending on how bad it melts. If the silicone melts maybe a not so melty Cork and seal up around it. If there's no hot water then you hit a vital organ, and will have to put it down.

>> No.1727483

ehh shit happens. OP if you have a friend that has a little 110v welder use that. Functionally it will be as good as new. If you can weld halfway decent make a square or round patch that looks like it's always been part of the water heater and paint the whole thing to hide it better. Landlady will never notice it.
I'm skeptical about the longevity of any kind of sealant / tape combo, but you did a great job on the door, so use whatever you think is best.

anon, maybe I’m looking at these pictures incorrectly or not seeing something, but it appears you are trying to fix the outer shell. Your water heater had a cast iron tank, surrounded by insulation, with an outer shell. You need to cut out t outer shell and insulation to access the cast iron tank, otherwise it’s very unlikely you’re going to fix anything. Hell, it’s unlikely you’re going to fix anything anyway. I’ve never shot a water heater because they’ve never tried to steal rims off my car or anything, but I would have to imagine if a round hit the actual cast iron tank, it wouldn’t put a hole in it, it would probably crack the tank.

Cut away at the messy silicon until I have an area to use the water weld, apply that and let it cure for the full amount of time. Slap a piece of flex tape over everything. Refill tank with water, if it holds for a few hours with no leaks then I try turning the power back on.

Brush shots? Not familiar with the terminology but all I did was take a shot at my target tree after hearing something moving near my woodpile. I didn’t want to harm the creature, bear bobcat or what have you. Just wanted to scare it away, and banging pots and pans has only temporarily worked in the past. And I needed firewood. My method worked and I don’t see what would be wrong with it, other than obviously not emptying the rifle outside aimed at the mountain just incase. I very much get that. Lesson very much learned. But what’s the harm in shooting a target tree that I could actually see, to scare away a potential black bear? A bear I have 0 desire to kill.

Even if you ignore the other three rules, just keeping your fucking finger off the trigger prevents 99.9% of firearm-related mishaps. Fucking dumbass walking statistic.

If you actually want to try and fix it so that it might have a snowball's chance of working, then I'd get some tin snips and cut the outer tin work off around where the bullet entry is. Dig out the insulation and find the hole in the tank. If there is a huge split then you're fucked. If it's pretty much a round hole you might be lucky and find a bolt slightly bigger than the hole and tap it out to that size. Put a rubber washer under the head and goop up the threads real good with some red loctite.

Or tap it out to the closest NPT thread and use an actual pipe plug.

Both of these things would require a bit of skill, some tools, a hell of a lot of luck, and at least two brain cells... So it's not looking too good for you Anon.

If you manage to patch the tank so that it doesn't leak then I would leave the hole in the outer skin open for a while to observe the plug and make sure it doesn't start leaking after a while.

When you're sure it isn't going to leak then you can patch the hole in the outer tin with a piece of flashing cut slightly larger than the hole and some pop rivets on the corners. Paint to match.

Never load a gun unless you're in an area where you can safely shoot it. If you're going to fuck around for the love of god get some snap caps. In case you weren't aware, most if not all lever actions from the last few decades will not allow the trigger to release the hammer until the lever is fully locked, because if it isn't then the gun is somewhere between chamber unlocked and round out of battery. Plus even if it doesn't have that kind of safety, there's the little fact that the cocking implement would be in the way of the hammer at all times except while fully locked. Neither of which apply to op by his own admission btw. So no, it is not common, in fact it's almost damn near impossible. But discounting all of that, your trigger finger has this magical ability to be straight while the others are not, thereby allowing it to not sweep the trigger during the cocking motion, not that it matters in the slightest since you can't set the gun off, but still.

I'll save the idiot lecture but the lack of trigger discipline that caused this is reason for a serious re-evaluation of your gun handling habits. Like seriously, I'm surrounded by live ammo here, never had an ND, neither did my father or his father before him.
> Semi-permanent solution
Cold showers until you learn how to handle guns better.
> Permanent solution
You punctured the outside wall, went THROUGH the insulation, and punctured the inside. The water heater is under 40-50 PSI of pressure from the mains alone. No amount of silicone goop, flex seal, and JB weld is going to be able to handle hydraulic pressure and heat. A radiator patch kit for a car MIGHT work but given this is potable water, and a serious hole, even that would be a temporary fix. If it's a glass lined tank, don't even bother. New water heater is in the cards, and best you do it before the home owner finds out lest you get sued for destruction of property, or some other insane nonsense.
> Muh I cant afford it
Hope your credit is OK because now is the time you use it.

Huh, how am I refusing to acknowledge and accept that it’s my fault/responsibility? I’ve done that several times. I fucked up big time, and learned my lesson.
I am literally here trying to fix the issue that arose from me fucking up.
I have already arranged to buy a new water heater and finally figured out how to remove the panel to gain access.

At least I’m not doing some of the things I could, which is blame it on the past tenant and say it’s leaking and have her foot the bill for buying and replacing a new one. Something she wouldn’t even question after how badly the other tenant treated the place. (There are other bullet holes around the house that certainly weren’t from me.) I’m not asking family, friends or hell anyone for money to cover the cost or help me install it.

I’m asking for nothing but advice on how to best fix my mistake from people who presumably have more knowledge on the subject than me. And if you haven’t noticed, I’m following what I think is decent advice, generally going with multiple people saying the same thing. I’m fixing my mistake. So fuck off with your mighteir than thou attitude if you’ve got nothing helpful to add. I’m a dude that made a stupid mistake and is trying to fix it. Don’t act like you’ve never fucked up in your life.

Telling the landlady, if I could even easily get in contact with her would just cause her stress and possibly money. If a plumber were to come and look under the sink I don’t know if he’d even do the job with all the the way out of code wiring down there. Then she would have to pay an electrician and I’m already trying to fix that for her free of charge.
Not sure why all of you think I’m this terrible person, but I suppose that’s your opinion to have.

Plus you all will get to see what it looks like before I cut the water and power back on, and if it looks terribly done I’m sure I’ll be told. Looks like it might be hard piped but won't know till you remove insulation and expose the connection. At least if they don't line up it's PVC so they'll be cheap and easy so you can rerun the pipe. If you need to, of course. The pipe should be CPVC but the pipe in your pic looks too white(cpvc has a yellowish color) but it may be a lighting issue. PVC and CPVC have incompatible fittings so you need to make sure which it is, but once again only an issue if the connections don't line up.

First note: turn off water to entire house while working on it.
Pex plus sharkbites will work for you. (everyone will say shit here, but sharkbites are ok in wall, fully legit unless local code says otherwise, I'd trust push fittings over ProPress myself)

Instead of rushing and messing up, you can use extra length to hook it up while it's not under the cabinet, and just a piece of romex, wirenuts and electrical tape to extend the electricity.
Get a water heater pan for it too. Duct tape the pan drain hole until you're gonna install everything properly (running a drain for the pan)

If you are trying to fix things up and do it right, clean it out under there, repair/replace wood, install a drain pan with a drain ran somewhere if possible. Clean up/replace wiring. Seal the walls up inside. You might want to try and reroute the plumbing, even if you just use an extra bit of pex and a sharkbite ballvalve, so there is a valve you can access easily. Turn the cabinet panel into an access panel that can be removed with just a few screws, don't nail it back in.

-Identify the greyish looking pipe, is is PolyButylene? PB is banned, lots of class action suits, the stuff fails in unexpected ways, etc. If it is PB, see how much is there and how hard to replace. There are sharkbite fittings made to connect PB to pex properly and safely.

Woah, man, chill. Read the thread, I took full responsibility for my stupidity.
And fully intend to replace it, that’s actually what I’m coming here to update you guys on. I spent the last 5 hours on a quest to get a replacement and succeeded. I bought it for $130 from an actual plumber. He said the cold water side looked as if it had leaked in the past but when he got there it was working fine and not leaking. He had just taken it out of a house two days ago, only reason they got rid of it was they were upgrading to a tankless system. He was kind enough to give me an extra fitting to replace the one that possibly had leaked in the past, to ensure it wouldn’t.
He also spent about 45 minutes giving me advice on how to install it and the do’s and don’ts of PEX, what tools I would need, how to shut off water to the house in a way where if the valve that may not have been touched in years starts leaking after I adjust it, I can call the city to have them fix their own thing. How to shut it off from the meter I suppose. I don’t know all the terminology. Also told me to call him if I had any trouble or had anymore questions.
Then went on to show me a map of an old fishing spot he used to go to when he was younger. Back off some abandoned logging roads that are apparently basically in my backyard as he grew up around where I live. It was a genuinely pleasant interaction and I told him I’d go looking for it when it warmed up and send him pictures if I found it.

Anyway, here’s a picture of the replacement so all of you can stop worrying that I’m going to fuck over my landlady.

(Yes that was a stupid solution, but I needed one to put my gf’s mind at ease after she screamed when she saw it pop out.)

lol at this point its hard to tell.
The electrical work has been fine since 1920, got a long record of bot starting a fire for 100 years and counting. Id wager itll be fine for a few more years.

That repair on the water heater however is concerning.
Water heaters have an inner tank, then a layer of insulation, then an outer shell.
It looks like you patched the outer shell, and the inner shell isnt really sealed. So the insulation cavity could fill up with water up to the point of the bullet hole. Every bit of insulation above the water hole will wick up water like a sponge. The dame and airy insulation will grow mold which will eventually grow and spread inside the tank. Eventually a small amount will reach the main tank cavity and possibly make its way through the pipes and into a kids glass of water.
Sure tanks get hot, it might kill them, but I dont know if they actually get THAT hot. Its a "water heater" not a "boiler". It does not imply the water will be sterile. Once you consider that these tanks are literally mineral traps then this becomes a real concern.

gun nuts are not the problem, people being stupid with guns and causing negligent damages or sometimes injury or deaths are the problem. Those people should be either better educated or not allowed to own firearms.

-Actual OP

And I agree that I should be better educated, though this incident has sure brought me to class. But also I do not disagree with mandatory gun safety training as maybe a high school course, or something offered for free before purchasing a firearm.
I really do not want to start the whole debate back up and summon all the /k/ haters but people need not to be ignorant when handling dangerous tools.

A lesson I have learned.

(and of course drunk drivers, lightening strikes, and plane crashes might outnumber the statistics of gun mishaps, but they are different issues and should be viewed as such.)

anyway, I am done with my homework, going to take another cold shower, hopefully my second to last, and head to bed. If all goes well I will install the new tank, roll up and ditch the carpet and order a new one, retouch the paint on the cabinets, and all will be well for a fraction of the cost it could have been. SPECIAL THANKS TO THE ANON THAT SUGGESTED CHECKING FOR USED TANKS. I now have a licensed plumber I can call for help if needed and that alone is probably worth the 4 hour drive and $130.

Thank you once again to the helpful anons.

The problem you have is that you don't understand how a water tank is constructed. The outside metal skin is not the tank. There is an inner tank, and you need to remove the outside skin to get to it. If you know a welder, maybe he can seal that inner tank, but they need to hold pressure, because they can blow up if they overheat.

Don't be a dumbass that tried to save $300 and blows his house up.

Just buy a tank, and chalk it up to firearms safety education.

It’s a mountainside actually, up here. Kinda hard to tell because of the fog but it is pretty steep the further you go up. And there is nobody anywhere near ricochet range. Plus people often misunderstand ricochets, as the bullet loses most of its velocity upon impact. Demolition ranch did a good video on that. I had always thought ricochets were much worse than they are.
And yes, I OP, watch gun channels.
Demo ranch, forgotten weps, Hickok45, iraqwarveteran, 22plinkster, JoergSprave if you can consider him a “gun” channel... maybe a few I’m forgetting. It’s the physics of it that facinates me. So while I’ve got little to no hands on experience I’m not completely clueless about firearms in general.

The whole lead toxicity thing I can’t really weigh in on, though I will say that I put my paper targets on a fairly large tree and they don’t seem to penetrate it fully, as there are no exit wounds unless it’s on the very side.
Which I thought wouldn’t be the case but I guess 30-30 isn’t great for penetration, especially since they are round nosed.
Also I don’t shoot my only rifle off all the time, a practiced with it a few times to get the feel, but the ammo is too expensive to be firing off. I probably ought to practice more though, based on some comments here.

Keep in mind she’s like 67 and I also cleaned out her cabinets, gave her a much newer heater, and even went ahead and fixed some of the unsafe wiring and installed a new over sink light and fixed the outside light. I’ll also be touching up her entire kitchen paint wise, and the new carpet is hers’. Obviously my dad was helping but he did make me do all of the work that only required one person. But the entire water heater repair seems to be about $185, I’ll know for sure tomorrow when I go and return 80% of what I bought. But much less than I thought. I have learned quite a bit this week, but all’s well that ends well.

Again I’ll post finalized pics tomorrow if this thread is even still breathing.
This is a before of the floor cleanup. But you can see all the woodwork is properly put back together.

OH and at 7:30am this morning I realized a good way to take at least warm showers (ish) without a water heater. At least at my place.
As here has I guess mini space heaters/fans built into all the bathrooms, which are super nice as it gets cold as fuck, particularly in the mornings when it’s cold. So I figured out I could put a punch of jugs and a garden waters bucket(?) I don’t know the term. But a bunch of water on the top shelf of my mirror/cabinet setup. Heat rises and whatnot. After a few hours the jugs of water are nice and warm. Ready to use.

And I wish I had thought about that 3 days ago but I know I deserved the painfully cold showers.

Thank you for the update and for, um, being you. You seem like a good person. This awful site would be better if there were more like you on it.
I raise a glass to you and to this thread.

People will often use it for hot coco or for boiling food, using hot water gets it up to temperature a little faster. Its also convenient in baking when you need mildly hot water around 120F.

Nobody should use hot water for cooking or drinking.

Also, OP here, how do I archive this? I think I’d like to send a link to this thread to my dad someday if he ever needs a good laugh.

Comment on new thread if you know how or have a link?

Good job, OP. I had lost faith in being a potential landlord, but rock on.
As for the discharge, my grandpa once said he was thrilled when his kids came home and said they had their first fender bender.
That meant they got their heads out of their ass and wised up -- a lot better than them never waking up and wrapping the car around a tree.

Good job op, I'm sure you'll be immortalized in the annual /diy/ gore threads.
