>Generally, when I make square hay bales, the reason I do so is to feed animals. It defeats the purpose of hay if I leave the bales to rot in a field, so I load them on a wagon so that I can take them to a barn loft for storage.

>Not stackcruisin

Why even live.

We have about 500 acres of farm ground, but only farm about 390 of it. We just don't have enough water to farm it all and some of the fields aren't the best soil so we just let those sit. We're actually not even a very big farm compared to a lot of the guys around here. And minuscule compared to some dryland farms in other parts of the state. But it's just My dad, my boy and I doing the work, so we don't have to pay wages to others and that keeps our overhead low. Also other than a few pieces of newer haying equipment we pretty much run older tractors and pickups. I like buying old shit and fixing it up.

We also have a bit over 3000 acres of pasture land too. Mostly prairie, but some river bottom land as well. We run around 100-120 pairs of cattle and the pasture pretty much takes care of them year round. We feed a little bit of our shittier quality hay to the cows in the winter to keep them going and sell the better stuff to other people for their cows and horses. Usually keep back around 25 heifers per year to keep the herd numbers up and sell the rest of the calves.

I do some machining, fab work, and repair jobs on the side, but try to not get too many side jobs because I have enough of our own shit to do. I was stacking small bales of hay for a bunch of the local farmers too there for a while, but my old man got diagnosed with prostate cancer a bit over a year ago and this summer I told them I wouldn't be stacking for them anymore. Just too much to do and not enough hours in the day.
