We're super lucky in that we live in a place where our tap water is 100% fine for drinking and cooking, with the exception of making yeasted doughs. There's something in our water that inhibits yeast action so doughs take forever to rise. I work around this by buying 99¢ jugs of spring water at the supermarket. No reason at all you can't split the line from the RO system to direct connect to the waterline for the fridge.
That's what we did. The water line is already there, you just need to either remove the filter cartridge,(many have a bypass valve,) or get a hollow filter cartridge that are sold online.
These days, a 15 year old fridge will last you a hell of a lot longer than a 5 year old one, let alone a new one.
